Stress is considered a normal part of people’s lives. But, constantly living in a heightened state of stress causes the body to become exhausted. Sadly, the adolescents are the most vulnerable to it and stress, if dealt with negligence, can lead to serious health concerns, both mentally and physically (Christopher, 2015). Hence, medications were developed by the researchers in order to treat stress such as commercial antistressants, which are undeniably expensive.
So, the researchers, upon knowing from a research study that the fish bile contains pharmaceutical residues such as sertraline, the researchers were motivated to conduct a study entitled, “Milkfish (Chanos Chanos) Bile Extract And Its Ability In Reducing Stress Levels: An In Vivo Study In White Mice (Mus Musculus).” This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of milkfish bile in terms of reducing stress levels. Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions: Is the milkfish bile extract effective in reducing the stress levels in terms of the decrease in the immobility time of the mice? Is there a significant difference between the effectiveness of the commercially-available antistressant and the milkfish bile extract in terms of reducing the stress levels? In data collection procedures, the white mice, which are the subjects of the study went through an acclimatization. After that, the collected milkfish bile was then extracted. The mice from all the set- ups were subjected to pre- forced swimming test for five minutes.
After the pre-FST, they were subjected to the pre- tail suspension test for 3 minutes. Interventions were then given orally in Set- up A with Diluted Milkfish Bile Exract and Set- up B with commercial antistressant (Mirtazapine). Twenty-four hours after the interventions were administered, the mice were prepared for the post- FST and post- TST. Both results from Set-up A (Milkfish Bile) and Set-up B (Mirtazapine) showed a decrease in the immobility time of the mice after the post- FST and post- TST. Nonetheless, results in Set-up C showed that having no intervention could not decrease and could amplify the stress levels which is why an increase in immobility time has been observed. The ANOVA revealed that the f value is less than the value of the f critical. Therefore, it is concluded that the milkfish bile extract is proven effective in reducing stress levels. Nevertheless, there is no significant difference between the effectiveness of the milkfish bile extract and the mirtazapine in terms of reducing the stress levels during the post- FST and post- TST.
