Absolutism, per Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, is a political theory that absolute power should be vested in one or more rulers. This means that one person rules over an entire country. During this time, the absolute monarch oversees basically everything. They control what religion the people of the country will follow and the overall economy. Fortunately, there have been very many mistakes by these rulers, Louis XIV being one of them. The mistakes of rulers are quite interesting the learn about because frankly, if they did not fail, who knows what would become of the present world.
The Devine Right of Kings was a group of people that believed that they get their powers from the God(s). This is beyond crazy and egotistical as that they thought they were so special that the God(s) personally gave them ruling right. If you were living under absolutism and you did not agree with the rules, you should probably keep your mouth shut about your disagreements or you will die.
Now, although I think absolute monarchy was rubbish, there is one ruler that was supposedly the “best”. I guess if you are going to control thousands of people, you should be good at it. Louis XIV’s famous quote is “L’etat, c’est moi!” which roughly translates into “The state, it is I”. This quote sounds weird at first but I understand that it basically means “I am the state”. Louis XIV loved his parties and his women (or men, who really knows). Versailles, being his estate, was probably a dirtier Las Vegas. Louis XIV’s reign lasted 72 years and he was a quite successful monarch compared to many other monarchs. Further research led me to the fun fact that his reign had the greatest age of French art and culture. The downfall of Louis XIV was that he was constantly at war.
Honestly, the entire lecture on absolute monarchy reminded me of The Most Dangerous Game because I’m sure if they monarchs wanted to, they could have hunted down peasants for sport; I would not put it above them. I, for one, am not a fan of absolutism because I am way too selfless of a person, but I am sure there are people out there that love it (unfortunately) as a modern-day way of government.
