  • Agricultural waste produced as a result of various agricultural operations. It includes manure and other wastes from farms, poultry houses and slaughterhouses; harvest waste; fertilizer run- off from fields.
  • Cow-dung waste with high moisture content and its readily biodegradable nature is causing major environmental problems due to improper waste management practices. So energy production methods like Composting or Bio gas production could be considered best alternative for the treatment of this organic waste. Press mud is another agricultural waste generated in Pakistan. Huge amount of sugarcane by products are generating, with a lot of this material not being utilized in a productive manner and pose a burden on environment. These byproducts had the great potential when mixed into agricultural soils as organic fertilizer with many of benefits that can improve soil health, and sustainable agronomic productivity.
  • Therefore study will be carried out on Composting of cow dung and press mud by using efficiently degrading fugal and bacterial strains isolated from cow-dung in different treatments through pile composting method. Other important factors that affect the rate of composting will be managed by controlling parameters like Ph, Moisture Content, C/N ratio, aeration and temperature throughout process. A suitable C/N ratio of feedstock is required for getting good quality compost in comparatively limited time and therefore, a right combination of the raw material would be blended for preparing a perfect recipe for composting. To maintain moisture content and suitable C/N ratio of a pile for composting, cow dung and press mud would be used in appropriate ratio.
  • Microbial enzymes are known to be superior enzymes In this study diverse aerobic bacteria and fungi capable of hydrolyzing Starch, Cellulose, Lignin, and Pectic substance present in the cell wall of plant will be isolated. These bacteria and fungi are producing enzymes such as Cellulase, pectinase, Lignase and amylase are known to play vital role in degradation of plant biomass. After screening, enzyme assay will be performed to check the degrading ability of selected enzyme. More efficient strain producing large hydrolysis zone during screening will be selected to perform further optimization parameters like optimum temperature, pH, effect of Carbon, nitrogen source and effect of other agricultural waste.
  • Optimized strain will be selected to introduce in compost pile for rapid composting method. The compost pile with alternate layer of cow dung and press mud would be composted using selected efficient isolates individually and as a consortium in different treatments. After maturation of compost, it would be applied in fields in different treatments with other fertilizers to check the effectiveness of compost by measuring nutrient availability and plant growth efficiency.
