Introduction

“It’s my body, It’s my choice!” is a slogan often used by supporters of abortion rights. This phrase is frequently heard at rallies and in debates. Every human being is the master of their own life, choosing to live as they wish. However, the issue of abortion is one of the most contentious and long-standing debates in society. It is a procedure that can lead to a lifetime of regret. This argumentative essay will provide reasoning against abortion, such as long-term side effects, spiritual pain, and the potential death of the mother.

Long-term Side Effects of Abortion

Abortion can cause long-term side effects that a woman may regret for her entire life. According to Brittany Raymer, a life issues analyst, there are two major common effects of abortion. First is placenta previa, a condition where the placenta covers the cervix, causing bleeding during subsequent pregnancies and complicating vaginal delivery. Second is the increased risk of preterm or premature birth in future pregnancies. The more a mother undergoes abortion, the higher the risk, contributing to higher rates of infant death and disability (Raymer, 2023). This indicates that aborting a child can lead to consequences that are undesirable and can complicate future pregnancies.

Spiritual Pain Caused by Abortion

Abortion can lead to spiritual pain for the mother, with various thoughts and truths resurfacing in her mind and soul post-abortion. Sydna Masse states, “Abortion: the guilt hurts more than the labor.” Guilt can be triggered by songs, paintings, or seeing other children the same age as the aborted baby, living happily and freely (Masse, 2021). These experiences can make a woman more susceptible to depression, anxiety, and other post-traumatic stress disorders, which are deeply spiritual in nature. The reality of rejection can hurt more once the mother undergoes the procedure. After the abortion, a mother may wonder if God will forgive her or if the church will accept her, altering her perception and experience within religious spaces. This signifies that abortion does not allow one to forget; the memory of the unborn child remains.

Risk of Death Associated with Abortion

While individuals may claim mastery over their bodies, this does not include the right to end another life, which might result in their own demise. Research indicates that in countries where abortion is legal, one in every 15 women dies following an abortion procedure. These fatalities can result from either medical or antibiotic abortions, with nearly 200 women dying annually due to complications (Smith, 2022). This evidence demonstrates that abortion is dangerous, regardless of whether it is performed by a licensed doctor or a traditional practitioner. Legalization does not equate to safety, as the risks remain inherent in the procedure. Instead, allowing the pregnancy to continue and letting the fetus, considered a gift from God, live freely could be a safer choice.

Conclusion

Considering all aspects discussed in this argumentative essay, continuing a pregnancy is the best way to allow the fetus to leave the womb naturally. God created human beings to care for His creation, and destroying it can lead to lifelong regret. The trauma of abortion can hurt more than the labor itself, and in the worst case, could result in the end of one's life. Like the story of a successful man who was nearly aborted by his mother, perseverance and hard work can lead to success, and he now stands before many, campaigning against abortion. This reminds us that God created us to keep His decrees and laws, and defying them could lead to being cast out from His nation. Abortion buries the child but not the memory, and it is up to each individual to choose between life and death.
