The number of animals used in research has increased with the advancement of research and development in medical technology. Every year, millions of experimental animals are used all over the world. The pain, distress and death experienced by these animals during scientific experiments have been a debating issue for a long timeWhile the sentence is not grammatically incorrect, it could be improved by adding a preposition to clarify the meaning. For example, it could be rephrased as follows: "The pain, distress, and death experienced by animals during scientific experiments have been the subject of debate for a long time."

Those in favor of animal testing argue that it has led to many advances in science, increasing the quality of life for both humans and animals. Animal testing aids researchers in finding drugs and treatments to improve health and medicineTo provide a more balanced discussion, the writer could briefly discuss the ethical arguments against animal testing.

In research and testing, animals are subjected to experiments that can include everything from testing new drugs to infecting with diseases, poisoning for toxicity testing, burning skin, causing brain damage, implanting electrodes into the brain, maiming, blinding, and other painful and invasive procedures. It can include protocols that cause severe suffering, such as long-term social isolation, electric shocks, withholding of food and water, or repeated breeding and separating of infants from mothers. In toxicity testing, animals used in chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity studies receive the test substance daily, seven days a week, for up to two years with no recovery periods. Many, if not most, animals die before the end of the study. With the exception of chimpanzees, animals who survive their use in research and testing can be killed after the study is completed. The California Biomedical Research Association states that nearly every medical breakthrough in the last 100 years has resulted directly from research using animalsThe paragraph could be organized more clearly to make it easier for the reader to follow. For instance, the writer could group the examples according to the medical conditions they have helped to treat, or arrange them in chronological order to show the evolution of animal testing.

The polio vaccine, tested on animals, reduced the global occurrence of the disease from 350,000 cases in 1988 to 27 cases in 2016. Animal research has also contributed to major advances in understanding and treating conditions such as breast cancer, brain injury, childhood leukemia, cystic fibrosis, malaria, multiple sclerosis, tuberculosis, and many others, and was instrumental in the development of pacemakers, cardiac valve substitutes, and anesthetics. Chris Abee, Director of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center's animal research facility, states that "we wouldn't have a vaccine for hepatitis B without chimpanzeesTo provide a more complete discussion, the writer could briefly mention the ethical concerns surrounding the use of chimpanzees in research.

If thalidomide had been properly tested on pregnant animals, its potential for causing severe birth defects would have been discovered before the drug became legal for human useThe writer could strengthen the argument by providing evidence to support it, such as examples of other drugs that were tested on animals and found to be harmful.

Expert Review
The essay discusses the issue of animal testing in the modern world, its advantages, and disadvantages. The organization of the essay is satisfactory, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The focus of the essay is clear, and the author presents arguments for and against animal testing. However, there is a lack of variety in the sentence structure and repetition of phrases throughout the essay. Also, the essay would benefit from more specific examples and evidence to support the arguments. The voice is passive in some instances, and the essay would be stronger with a more active voice.

What can be improved
The essay starts with an introduction that provides an overview of the issue of animal testing. However, the essay could be improved by using more synonyms for "animal testing" and "advantages/disadvantages" to avoid repetition. The thesis statement is not explicitly stated, but the author's stance on the issue is clear from the arguments presented. The body paragraphs discuss the advantages and disadvantages of animal testing. While the author presents compelling arguments, there is a need for more specific examples and evidence to support the claims. For example, the essay mentions the discovery of insulin as a result of animal testing, but the author could provide more details about the experiment and its impact on medicine. Also, the essay lacks variety in the sentence structure, with most sentences being simple and straightforward. The author could incorporate more complex sentences and sentence structures to improve the flow and readability of the essay. The voice of the essay is generally passive, which can weaken the arguments presented. For instance, the essay mentions that "animals are subjected to experiments" without specifying who is subjecting them to experiments. A more active voice would strengthen the author's arguments and make the essay more engaging for the reader. The conclusion summarizes the main arguments presented in the essay and restates the author's stance on the issue of animal testing. The conclusion is satisfactory, but it could be improved by providing a more memorable ending to leave a lasting impression on the reader. Overall, the essay is organized and focused, but there is room for improvement in sentence structure, evidence, and voice. With some revisions, the essay could be more persuasive and effective in conveying the author's viewpoint on animal testing.
