Introduction

Pot, grass, dope, Mary Jane, boom, 420, ganja, weed. Formally known as Cannabis it is classified as a cannabinoid drug of which should be legalized for recreational use inside the democracy of Australia. The purpose of speaking upon this topic is to not advertise and call for the medical use of marijuana in Australia as medicinal marijuana has already been legalized on the 24th of February 2016. Rather, to put in place measures such as to protect the Australian youth from laced cannabis such as glass or heroin – as sighted from the American Addiction Centre. As well as to reduce the receiving of criminal records for marijuana’s use through the process of legalizing the recreational use of the drug. The simple yet effective solution to the illegal overuse of marijuana in a recreational setting within Australian society is the legalization of the product through amendments in the Narcotic Drugs act. This would in turn relieve pressure from the public system and allow for more resources to be focused on more significant crimes. So this essay is going to answer the question “why should marijuana be legalized?”.

The First Argument Why Marijuana Should Be Legal is That It Will Allow the Police/Courts to Focus on More Violent Crimes

The amendment of the legislation in the Narcotic Drugs Act (1976) would make the possession and the recreational use of marijuana legal therefore reducing the 77,549 cannabis arrests between 2016-2017, as reported by the Australian institute of Health and Welfare. Reform to the Narcotic Drug act would establish an outline for the licensing – both selling and purchasing, of goods, like such that has been done in the Narcotic Drugs Regulation legislation (2016) in relation to medicinal and scientific purposes. The nearly 50% increase of use and possession of marijuana in the last 10 years is a trend of which is consistently going to grow with preferred use of it increasing within Australia and further reasoning for the necessary legalization. It may seem crucial to regulate the now illegal drugs use, but consider the time, effort and resources that could be otherwise used for more serious crime such as dismantling the drug black market. The important aspect of reducing the flooded court and overcrowded prison system would relieve pressure of the public system and allow for more violent or serious cases to have the attention that is essential.

The Second Argument Why Marijuana Should Be Legalized is That the Government Benefits From Legalization

The use of medical cannabis is already legal within Australia, demonstrated through the state of Victoria legalizing the plants use, for children that suffer from epilepsy that is not capable of being dealt with through a course of medication. As well as other states establishing limits and regulations of its medical use. Through the pre-established success of the medical marijuana industry already awarding the Australian government with thousands of intractable medical conditions... The foremost benefit in the legalization of marijuana is the possible $1 billion in tax revenue and the 250,000 jobs that could be generated by the simple growth of a plant if following the precedent that the United States of America established. The approximate $1 billion in tax revenue could contribute to the improvement of general public services, health, education or public order and safety.

The Last Argument Why Weed hould Be Legal is Protecting the Australian Youth

With Cannabis being the most widely used illicit drug by the Australian youth, with 40% of the teen population, stating that they have made use of marijuana on a regular basis as sourced by a research paper by the Parliament of Australia. With the massive use of this drug, instead of deeming an epidemic within the community, legalization of the drug and regulation of the product should occur. Proposing an alteration to the policy provides safeguards to the use of drugs, as such that of alcohol and tobacco that has already been established. Restrictions on purchase ages, advertising, the use of appealing packaging and requirements for licenses allows for greater protection for the youth. As recognized through the Australian institute of Health and Welfare the “primary source of cannabis is reported by users aged 14 plus to have obtained the illegal goods from friends”, in 2016. To reiterate, this is further evidence of the need to regulate goods produced so that the adolescence within Australia is not being given laced product such as that of glass or heroin, that could further damage their growth and development.

Rebuttal – Long Term Effects, Marijuana as a Gate Way Drug

The use of marijuana as a recreational drug, may perform as a gate way into the world of hard drugs, where individuals may be more influence to consume such illicit products. As a consequence of this gate way drug more pressure may be placed upon the justice and medical system to deal with the serious problems that present themselves. However, it should be considered that through the legalization of recreational use, both medical and police services will be capable of receiving greater funds through tax revenue, to adequately deal with individuals’ susceptibility to a product. As well as this, through continued use of cannabis long term effects such as bronchitis may come to, but through the regulation via the government on the purchasing and selling of marijuana, restrictions on the amount purchased may limit the development of longstanding consequences.

Conclusion

To conclude, within the democracy of Australia there is a necessary need to legalize the use and possession of the marijuana drug in a recreational manner. This can be demonstrated through the crucial need to regulate already existing cannabis use in relation to the youth of Australia which is further back by the benefits that will entail in both a government manner as well as upon the justice and court system through the changing of policy in the Narcotic Drugs act, which is a simple yet effective solution.
