There are many definitions as to what kinesiology is. Kinesiology refers to the study of human movement, which comes from the Greek word ‘kineses’ which means ‘movement’. It came about in the 20th century, by Lovett, who developed a system that tested and graded the strength of muscles, and this was developed by Florence and Henry Kendall who made this into a book. Kinesiology was developed by George Goodheart when he was using a technique on a patient, and he realised that this technique was helping to increase the strength of the muscle with the use of massaging the patient’s muscle. He went on to name this new profound therapy, applied kinesiology as he used the applied information from studying the patient’s muscle and found a solution to the patient’s muscle issue. Kinesiology uses muscle response testing in order to gauge the motor responses of the CNS to a sensory challenge. Kinesiology is dependent on the client’s needs however all methods include muscle testing in order to help to identify the main stressors in one’s body. It can help to address psychological, psychological as well as biomedical mechanisms and principles of movement. Kinesiology also visualizes muscles which are linked to different organs and this helps to evaluate the health of a patient using manual muscle testing.
Kinesiology can help to benefit mental health wellbeing because therapy methods such as acupuncture, can help to stimulate the energy inside of an individual thus raising their positivity and can increase their mood. Applied kinesiology can also help patients that have depression or anxiety because a kinesiologist will often converse with the patients in order to understand the patient’s issues and symptoms. This can delve into the patient’s cause of anxiety or cause of depression, which can help to create a rapport between the kinesiologist and patient, which can help the patient to become more comfortable with the kinesiologist and relieve some of their stress.
Applied kinesiology also can treat depression through making lifestyle changes on an individual, as many people who have depression often have unhealthy habits like substance abuse. This has an affect on the patient’s wellbeing, as these lifestyle changes can help to decrease depression/anxiety levels. Applied kinesiology also helps systemize the body’s chemistry with the nervous system of the individual which can take off the internal stress that an individual may be facing from the root cause. to often uses an individual’s own body’s chemistry in order to heal itself, and to avert any stress that is caused, which helps the patient’s wellbeing.
