Most of the people in this day and age don’t know how to make the best and most healthy meals for themselves and their families. A lot of people simply don’t have the money to afford fancy meals that are healthy. People of lower income rely on food stamps which are provided by the government to buy what they need from grocery stores to stay nourished. However, some of these people take advantage of these stamps and buy foods that aren’t the best choices. People who are no longer in school might not want to give the effort and hard hours into learning how to properly cook. Although, when a school requires students to take a cooking class, they will be encouraged to learn the ways to properly prepare a meal. Cooking should be a mandatory elective for students to take at school because it is better for people to learn how to cook at a younger age, it will also help encourage more kids to come to school every day, and finally it is a great grade or GPA booster. Although making a cooking class be mandatory at schools, it may become a hazardous environment with lots of kids fooling around with their friends.

When people become adults or even young adults, they tend to become very busy with work and sometimes children. Once they are out of school and start working a full time job, people don’t have time to learn how to cook healthy meals. Kids should learn to cook at school where they are most of the day learning useful skills. This way, they will have to learn how to cook. Cooking at school is lots of fun. The kids can take the class with their friends so if they are not entertained already by making food and eating is during school, they will be having a good time in the class with their friends. According to The New York Times, “Too many Americans simply don’t know how to cook. Our diets, consisting of highly processed foods made cheaply outside the home thanks to subsidized corn and soy, have contributed to an enormous health crisis. More than half of all adults and more than a third of all children are overweight or obese.”

Everyone knows the feeling of waking up on a Monday morning bright and early at 6:30 in the morning and having to get up to go to work or school. It is the worst. Cited by newamericamedia.org, “More than five percent of student pretend to be sick so they don’t have to go to school. However, with a fun cooking class, much more students will be encouraged to go to school everyday so they can have fun making delicious meals.” Lots of people become depressed because they dislike school a ton or because they don’t have too many friends that care for them at school. Learning to cook at school on the other hand is a great way to get to know other kids and have a great time. Every week kids will learn to cook with different types of materials or cookware or maybe even different meals like breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Overall, I think that kids learning to prepare meals at school is a great way for kids to get excited to go to school everyday.

Finally, some kids struggle with certain classes and don’t end up getting good final grades in every class. This will affect their final GPA unfortunately. However, there is a solution that can help bump up or increase kids GPA’s at school. A cooking class at school would be a very easy and relaxing class to take at any school. Every student wants the highest GPA that they can achieve, and this way kids will be able to help out their grades by taking an easy class. Students would not necessarily be graded on the final product and the appearance of the cooking but instead on how well they listen to instructions and behavior. Not only would cooking help out with students GPA’s, it is also a commonly known stress reliever. “Cooking is therapy and, fattening or not, it’s effective … Just why cooking is so soothing may be because it encourages creativity.” Quoted from nydailynews.com. Having a relaxing class like this near the end of your school day is a great stress reliever.

Although having a cooking class at school may not be the best idea because it may become a large fire hazard, it is still a good idea for students. This class would be great to help people to learn how to cook at a younger age, it will also help encourage more kids to come to school everyday, and finally it is a great grade or GPA booster. It is a much more intelligent idea to make kids learn to cook at school where they are forced to and get a grade rather that trying to get adults with little to no free time on their hands to learn how to cook properly.
