Apart from academic and co-curricular activities, another crucial component that schools must integrate and conduct for students is the Citizenship Advancement Training, commonly referred to as CAT. CAT is not merely an activity for students to undertake; it is a fundamental requirement for enhancing students' behaviors and actions in various situations, not only within the school campus but also in any place they may go. In fact, CAT is defined as a training program for both public and private schools that aims to enhance students' social responsibility and commitment to the development of their communities. It also fosters their ability to uphold law and order as they actively participate in community activities and assist community members, especially in times of emergency. Through this program, we can confidently assert that CAT offers numerous important benefits and advantages to students, particularly Grade X students, whom we believe are future leaders in school.
Discipline, specifically self-discipline, is the primary lesson that CAT imparts to students. When one possesses self-discipline, it implies discipline in all aspects of life. Being a well-disciplined individual signifies responsibility not only for one's actions but also for one's words. A prime example of this is time management. In school, time is one of the most critical aspects to consider, reflecting the saying, “Time is Gold.” If you are a member of CAT, punctuality is mandatory, whether you like it or not, to avoid punishment. Consequently, students learn to manage their time effectively and understand the essence of punctuality. Moreover, students learn the importance of respect, not only for their teachers or elders but also for their peers and even those younger than them. CAT upholds the saying, “Respect begets respect.”
CAT trains students to move as one, help as one, and work as one, fostering unity. CAT stands by the saying, “There is more power in unity than division.” This training also awakens leadership qualities within students by educating them and providing experiences that highlight the qualities a leader must possess. Furthermore, CAT helps students build and cultivate healthy relationships with others to maintain peace and avoid unpleasant situations such as conflicts and disarray. Importantly, CAT encourages students to become more active and engaged in community services and programs where their presence is needed. It allows students to participate in and experience activities that bestow wisdom and proficiency, skills they can utilize in the future.
CAT is not just an activity; it offers numerous benefits not only for the school and students but also for others. Thus, it must be executed in compliance with the DepEd Order No. 50 s. 2005, which states, “In order to ensure the effective implementation of the Citizenship Advancement Training (CAT) in both public and private secondary schools, the Regional and Division Offices are strongly advised to monitor its implementation and ensure that the guidelines are strictly complied with” (Department of Education, 2005). It is evident that students who have undergone CAT become more disciplined and aware of their duties and responsibilities than before. Therefore, CAT should be implemented and practiced by students for the betterment of all.
In conclusion, Citizenship Advancement Training (CAT) plays a vital role in shaping well-rounded, responsible, and community-oriented students. Its emphasis on discipline, unity, leadership, and community service ensures that students are prepared to face future challenges and contribute positively to society. The benefits of CAT extend beyond the school environment, highlighting its importance as a comprehensive educational program.
