In today’s world there are many options for students completing high school. With the ongoing process of globalization and technology developments, it is very easy to be confused on what one wants to do when they join the workforce. Everyday millions of parents ask the age-old question, should my child go to college or go to a trade school? There are many misconceptions about today’s education system. The modern ideas about college, advantages of college, and alternate paths are just some of the topics that most parents wish to be informed on to make the right choice for their child.

People with a college degree usually make around $500 more a week then people without a post-secondary education. While the difference may seem small, a study was conducted in 2014 that people with a bachelor’s degree may make almost one million dollars more in their lifetime. People who attend a post-secondary institution experience higher job security. Even when a job does not require an education, 91% of jobs will be given to those with a degree. While unemployment for unskilled labor is high, “According to BLS data, just 2.2% of workers with a bachelor's degree are facing unemployment, compared to 10.1% of workers with only a high school diploma.”

While College seems like a viable option, attending a trade school is another route to take. College may not be for everyone, some may not have the money, while others struggle with general studies. Many high schools today push for all students to attend college, but most do not discuss trade schools. For some families, trade schools may be a better pick.

Trade schools are second level institutions where trades, such as welding, are commonly learned. Unlike college, students attending trade schools can graduate in 2 years, unlike 4 in college. This gives attendees an advantage joining the workforce, as they have 2 years of experience with an actual skill such as mechanical engineering. Trade schools give students the exact skills they need for their trade. It is also commonly known that trade schools cost less than college degrees. This means graduates of trade schools have much less student debt then the average college student. “Unlike the traditional fall and spring semester in college, trade schools have multiple start dates. This gives flexibility in when enrollees can attend classes”.

Overall, not attending any sort of second level institution is the last option for some. Popular to contrary belief, not everyone who choses to not go to college will fail in life. Success is possible with hard work and determination. Success isn’t necessarily measured by the amount of money you make. To some people, success is measured by their happiness, or fulfilling their dreams. As time goes on, some people will recognize the importance of college and get a degree from taking classes online. Other people may start their career in an unskilled labor position and be promoted into higher jobs. But from a financial standpoint, most adults are better off financially to go to a second level education institution. Therefore, for a likely chance of a better future and education, It is highly recommended that you further your education after high school.
