Philosophy uses reasoning and logic to investigate the experiences humans encounter in their existence. It involves close reading, critical thinking, and analysis of every philosopher's work. Each philosopher offers unique perspectives on how we perceive the world we live in. Philosophy teaches us how to engage in critical thinking, encouraging our minds to explore beyond our expectations, reasoning, and beliefs. Out of all the twelve philosophers that we learned about, each had a significant impact, but there is one philosopher who profoundly influenced my perspective on life. This philosopher changed my philosophical approach to our existence.

Exploring the Philosophical Insights of Doubt

That influential philosopher is René Descartes, often referred to as the Father of Modern Philosophy. As we progress through our lives, we tend to reflect on our existence. We harbor doubts about the things we do, think, and how we react to life's changes. René Descartes made me realize that life is indeed unimaginable.

René Descartes firmly believed that knowledge cannot arise solely from our senses, such as feeling, tasting, hearing, smelling, or seeing. He proposed that we need to challenge our consciousness and awareness to discover the truth. According to Descartes, it is essential to doubt everything, including our existence and choices. Doubt, he argued, is crucial in philosophy. As he famously stated, "If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things" (Descartes, 1641).

This quote suggests that if we seek the true meaning of life, we must pursue reality and question what we perceive through our senses. Our minds are limitless, and we must train them to realize that everything we think has no boundaries.

Contributions Beyond Philosophy

Descartes also made contributions to other fields of study. In psychology, he is known for his theory of dualism, which posits that there are two realms of existence. This theory has had a lasting impact on how we understand the mind-body relationship. Furthermore, Descartes made significant contributions to mathematics, including the development of the "rule of signs" technique. This technique determines the number of positive and negative roots of a polynomial and is famously known as the Cartesian Plane. His brilliance and the knowledge he imparted have made our lives easier and more convenient through inventions that utilize his equations. Today, both students and professionals continue to rely on these mathematical principles.

Conclusion

In life, there are many uncertainties and questions that we yearn to understand more deeply. Some questions remain unanswered, compelling us to continue our pursuit of knowledge. We live in this world not only to exist but to explore its wonders while we can. Life resembles a roller-coaster ride, and we must learn to embrace it. One thing is certain: the lessons that philosophers provide will shape us into who we are today, and our journey in studying philosophy continues.
