In America, people have been arguing over gay rights. Americans believe gays should have more rights, including marriage or adopting children. According to ABC News, supporters of same sex adoption now outnumber opponents for the first time in ten years. Forty-seven percent think gay couples should be legally permitted to adopt while slightly fewer, forty-two percent disagree (Merkle). Even though a child living in an orphanage is not the best option for him or her, it is not a gay couples place to adopt them. If a person wants to help with the orphan crisis issue, adoption is not the only way they could help. Anyone can help out by simply donating, informing others about the issue, and so much more. Same sex adoption should not be legal because children need stability, to live a healthy life style, and God intends parenting to be between a man and a woman.
Stability is key to a child in order for them to be healthy mentally and emotionally. Homosexual couples cannot provide the stability married heterosexual couples can give. Conservatives tried to prove a point by having Robert Oscar Lopez argue about the issue. Lopez blames his adult social dysfunction on having been raised by a lesbian mom. He wrote that same-sex parenting inherently constitutes “child abuse,” as do single-parent adoption and divorce (Ford). Lopez states that same sex adoption is child abuse because, “Normalization” demands a kind of silence from multiple parties in a child’s life. The child’s lost biological parent(s) must keep a distance or disappear to allow two gay adults to play the role of parent. Extended family must avoid asking intrusive questions and shouldn’t show any disapproval through facial expressions or gestures. Schools and community associations have to downplay their celebrations of fatherhood or motherhood (even canceling Father’s Day and Mother’s Day in favor of “Parenting Day”). The media have to engage in a massive propaganda campaign, complete with Disney productions featuring lesbian moms, to stifle any objections or worries. Nobody must challenge the gay parents’ claim that all is being done for love” (Ford).
Children need two role models who are different genders, because every child has the right to have a mother and a father. Sam Ov, the author of “Motion for Debate: Adoption by Gay Couples Should be Banned,” states that homosexual activists put their personal desires above the rights of these children to have a chance at a normal family life with a father and mother (Ov). According to Ken Connor, president of the Family Research Council, gays should not be allowed to raise kids. In the studies reported so far, conservatives are against same sex adoption, because "children are not guinea pigs and should not be used as pawns in some grand social experiment." (Saletan). The position of the Family Research Council, in short, is that families are too important to subject to research. (Salatan). Children need stability to live a healthy life.
If an adopted child was raised by a same sex couple, the child would have a hard time growing up in a healthy lifestyle. According to Susan Golombok and Fiona Tasker, researchers of the Family and Child Psychology Research Center at City University in London, children raised by a homosexual parent were much more likely to experiment with homosexual behavior themselves. Children would be really confused about their parents, and the children would never know what a true father or mother was. When the child grows up, he or she will struggle with forming a proper family or behaving in a traditional way with their future children (Ov). Another important point to consider is how the child would feel compared with other children. Their friends could possibly make fun of them throughout their childhood and teenage years because of how they were raised. Apart from the teasing, the child would always feel insecure and ashamed of his or her parents, which could cause issues and traumas.
Another reason same sex couples should not adopt children is because it is not what the Lord has intended. The Lord intended marriage and raising children to be between a man and a woman. As Proverbs states, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5,6). If our country allows same sex adoption, it will encourage same sex marriage, even if the gay or lesbian couple are not married. People need to understand the importance of a man and a woman working together in marriage. As Ephesians mentions, “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.” (Ephesians 5:21-33). In the church, humans have different roles, but in the end, everyone should submit to the Lord.
Same sex adoption should not be legalized for many reasons. Most children are used to being raised in the traditional life style, and allowing same sex couples to adopt can cause instability. Children raised by this different lifestyle will also have to worry about being teased or bullied in school anywhere else. That problem could cause the child to become very upset and possibly end up having emotional issues. Last but not least, God has never planned on children being raised by same sex couples. People need to keep in mind what the Lord has intended. Even though same sex adoption should not be allowed, there are still plenty of ways you could help with the orphan crisis without becoming a parent. Anyone could get any church connected to an orphanage. Jillian Burden, author of “Ten Ways to Care for Orphans Without Adopting,” states that a person could also donate on behalf of children with special needs or perhaps support an orphan graduate program, give to an adopting family, and also send care packages to orphanages (Burden). The orphan crisis is an important issue to focus on; however, same-sex couples need to find different ways to help.
