Struggles have always been looked at as a negative thing, and are usually associated with being weak However, many people tend to forget that this is a natural part of life, which helps us grow as individuals. People need to remember that our past is what makes us who we are, but is not what defines us. Many of us stay in the past but never remember that there is a whole future to look forward to.
The lessons learned from both Color Purple and Unless are very similar. The first one is People can find out their true capabilities by pursuing through their struggles. Second never give up. By giving up you aren't able to find out your true pentational. Finally Both men and women are capable of doing the same thing. Through examining Rita in Unless and Sylvia in The Colour Purple it is evident that one who is able to embrace the struggles that they face will be better able to overcome them. To begin, through an individual’s struggles it allows them to find their true selves.
In the first part of the book Unless by Carol Shields, Reta Winters has her whole life figured out and plans to pursue her desire to become a writer. However, the people around her discourage reta making her let go of her dreams. Later on in the book Reta struggles teach her that she is a fighter and that she can fight for beliefs. “Why do you want to become a writer? You already have everything want” (Unless Carol Shield). Many people believe once you hit a current age you have learned everything that is needed to know in order to survive life but that is not true. Reta was able to find her true self this allowed her to become a strong bright woman and reminds her to fight for what she believes in.
In comparison to Reta, Celie from the book Colour Purple, is similar because they both figure out who they are and their potential in life. Ceile the main character in the book colour purple is physically and mental abused by the men in her life in leaving her to be less confident and having no one to turn to in this time of need. ”He beat me today’ cause he say I winked at a boy at church. I may have had something in my eye but I never winked”. Near the end of the book Crial is able to find her voice and stand up for herself. As many people look back at their own struggles they begin to realize how stronger and powerful they were for overcoming their struggles. This allows them to be confident and begin to stand up for their rights and beliefs. Both characters were faced with their own difficulties but found a way to overcome them and learn something new from their come, although times may be tough never give up because struggles in life are temporary. Reta’s daughter Norah has given up on everything to sit on the street and hold u a sign that say GOODNESS. Reta and the family doesn't know that this is happening but once they do find out they do everything they can to bring her conformt weather it would be sitting behind her all night or asking her to come home. “Please talk to me! please come home!” (Unless Carol shields 155). Because they never gave up on their daughters they found the true reason why she was out on the streets. By never giving up and sticking through the struggles people are able to grow as an individual and become more mature since they have already been through one struggle when life brings people other struggle they are able to learn from their mistakes and understand what they could do better to achieve or overcome the race. Likewise Cile is similar because she never gives up on her children just like Reta did for her daughter Clia is taken away from her family and is forced to live with a man she doesn't love and gets raped every night she was there. She visits her family for one day and promise them that she would come back for them. “Though I am the stepmother to Mr.__’s four children, it’s my own children that I love unconditionally and I will do anything for them.” (Color Purple pg 94).
Although this character has been through alot through this book she never gives up on her family and does everything in her power to get her family back together. By giving up people will never achieve anything giving up in any aspect of life means the person’s struggles have overcome them instead of the other way around. The two characters were able to embrace and understand the hardship that their struggles bring with it.
Women can achieve the same opportunities as men when they put their mind into the book unless Reta is despised by all the other men and women in her life because she wants to work. In the beginning of the book Reta finished writing her first book and presus to make a second book but because she has everything that the deal women should wanted during that period time. She is not being taken seriously by the man that is interviewing her because she is a woman. “What do you do at home? Do you Cook?”(Unless Carol Shields pg 45). Because Reta was belittled by the interviewer because of her gender this made Reat stand up for herself and continue her book. Day in and day out she continued to write on her book until she believed that the book was a masterpiece.
Once a woman put her mind to it no matter what obstacle might come her way she is able to overcome. Similarly Ciela is very similar to Reta because at first she feels discouraged but ends up finding the voice she need to leave her situation and find happiness for herself In the book The color purple women are looked down upon in society and are seen as sexual objects.
Many of the women lose their lives because their men were controlling them. “Harpo and Mr.__ treat women as if they’re children and, perhaps, worse than children—as if they have no will or rights of their own.” This proves that women can do what men do and they have their own mind. Men tend to think that women are weak and can't do anything making them think they can control them and miniplate them into doing whatever they want. One as well as the other was able to comprehend the struggle of being women. The characters break the stereotype of how women should act and gain confident In conclusion both characters show that they can overcome their struggles.
Each struggle you face in your life makes you a strong person physically and mentally. Through your struggles you learn how to think breath and deal with stressful situations. As people go through struggles they often will find strength they didn't know they had. People start to realize that their pain and struggles does not define who they are but it is yourself who define who you will become. As a person you being to become a stronger person and realize no matter how bad the situation you can overcome it.
