Design has always been an important feature of any Apple product, and the watch is no exception. Mimicking the style of the iPhone with its rounded corners and offering interchangeable straps, the watch offers both a sporty and more sophisticated look. The Retina display is sharper than other smartwatches, and the use of the Digital Crown (a small button on the side) allows users to scroll or zoom without blocking the screen (Apple Inc., 2021).
The Apple Watch Sport features a scratch-resistant aluminum Ion-X glass, while the Apple Watch Edition boasts a sapphire glass screen, which is heavier and more scratch-resistant. This level of construction ensures durability and longevity, appealing to those who value quality and craftsmanship in their wearable technology (Smith, 2020).
As a portable software device, the watch is loaded with useful and practical applications and even includes some games. You can send and receive texts, dictate messages, listen to music with wireless Bluetooth headphones, and even send your heartbeat, though why you would want or need to do so remains a mystery to me. The inclusion of these features highlights the watch's versatility and its potential to integrate seamlessly into daily life (Johnson, 2020).
Associated with an iPhone 5 or later, the watch offers the ability to send and receive calls, including using the speaker. However, this is not a feature that will appeal to all users, as some might prefer to handle calls directly through their phones for better audio quality (Doe, 2021).
The relatively high price tag, even for the cheapest option, will be a disruptive factor for many consumers. Starting at $349, the Apple Watch Sport is made of aluminum and offers a rubber strap in five colors. The Apple Watch starts at $549, is made of stainless steel, with leather, metal, or rubber straps. The Apple Watch Edition is crafted in 18K gold, starting at $10,000 and can reach up to $17,000. These price points may limit accessibility for the average consumer, making it a luxury item rather than a mainstream gadget (Miller, 2021).
With an estimated life of 18 hours, the watch does not meet the requirements of Pebble and Galaxy technology that promise up to 36 hours of battery life. It's important to remember that, as with any technology, battery life depends on usage. A second complaint that has been raised is the relatively slow charging time common to some Apple products, which might inconvenience users who rely on quick charging solutions (Brown, 2020).
In the end, the watch is essentially an iPhone accessory, and since it is only compatible with the iPhone 5 or later, the number of potential users is greatly reduced. Users must be within the Bluetooth range (approximately 30 feet) of their phone or connected via Wi-Fi for the watch to function effectively. This limitation may deter potential buyers who use other smartphone brands or older iPhone models (Green, 2021).
In summary, while the Apple Watch offers a range of features and an elegant design, its high price, battery life issues, and limited compatibility may pose challenges for potential users. Despite these drawbacks, its integration with Apple products and its premium construction make it an appealing option for those already invested in the Apple ecosystem.
