A mood is a feeling or a person's specific state of mind at any particular time. A mood is also the prevailing emotion found not only in people but also in literature, music, and other expressive arts. Moods set the overall tone for speech or writing and are an important element in literature as well as in everyday life. The mood is an emotional state which from emotions, feelings, or affects less specific, intense and likely to be triggered by a particular stimulus or event.
Moods are typically described as having either a positive or negative valence. In other words, people usually be in a good mood or a bad mood. Mood also differs from temperament or personality traits which are even longer-lasting. Nevertheless, personality traits such as optimism and neuroticism predispose certain types of moods. Long term disturbances of mood such as clinical depression and bipolar disorder are considered mood disorders.
Mood is an internal, subjective state but it often can be inferred from posture and other behaviours. "We can be sent into a mood by an unexpected event, from the happiness of seeing an old friend to the anger of discovering betrayal by a partner. We may also just fall into a mood.
The origin of mood relies on the theory of the four humours: blood, phlegma, yellow and black bilious. Mood can be balanced by the equilibrium of these four liquids. Mood is also difficult to define because one's judgment depends on the perception of mood in other people. It is a highly subjective concept which is backed by personal references. Mood can be expressed with different tonalities. Its panel of expressions can likely explain the different definitions and analysis of this notion.
Research also shows that a person's mood can influence how they process advertising. Mood has been found to interact with gender to affect consumer processing of information. In literature, mood is the feeling created in the reader. This feeling is the result of both the tone and atmosphere of the story.
The author's attitude or approach to a character or situation is the tone of a story. The tone sets the mood of the story. Atmosphere is the feeling created by mood and tone. The atmosphere takes the reader to where the story is happening and lets them experience it much like the characters.
