Waste collection and rubbish disposal play an immensely imperative role in the global cleanliness and sustainability drive, with people’s wellbeing and the preservation of resources being the responsibility of every government.
The issue of waste management in India is of great prominence and highly disregarded at the same time, in the public essence. Delhi alone generates 8,000 metric tonnes of waste per day. At this frequency, we will need additional land to dispose of waste, more energy for its transportation, emanate more harmful gases and pollute our water, air and land.
Thousands of years ago humans simply dug a hole and buried their refuse and waste. This was an effective technique for these early people because their population was relatively small and they did not produce waste on the same scale or with the levels of complexity that modern humans do. Burying the rubbish helped to prevent bugs and rodents from becoming a nuisance and spreading diseases.
While primitive humans produced very minute waste, and that which was produced would biodegrade quickly, modern humans produce much larger amounts of waste, much of which is not biodegradable. Hence, burying all of our garbage is not a sustainable solution. Additionally, many types of waste may be damaging to the soil, ground water and surrounding habitat.
The most important reason for waste assemblage is the fortification of the environment and the health of the population. Rubbish and waste can cause air and water pollution. Contaminated garbage is also known to produce injurious gases that mix with the air and can cause breathing difficulties in people. By scrutinizing the vegetation around landfill sites carefully you can determine the destruction that can be caused by garbage and waste if left unprocessed in the open. Rotting garbage and waste emanates a foul smell that can cause nausea among people who come into contact with it. It can also be a foundation for waterborne diseases such as cholera and abdominal conditions and discomfort. These organizations should make it a priority to secure their landfill sites so that water bodies are not affected by the garbage and waste collected from homes and commercial establishments.
There are many challenges facing the waste management and recycling industry but there is also a lot of tremendous work going on to guarantee that this is an industry that will continue to deliver effective, sustainable and environmentally sound waste management and recycling and preserve our environment for the forthcoming generations.
