Understanding Global Warming

Global warming is a really big deal that affects everyone on our planet. As temperatures keep going up and extreme weather gets more common, we’ve got to do something about climate change. In this talk, I’ll break down what’s causing global warming, its consequences, and the solutions we can use to fight it. I’ll mix in science, some personal stories, and strong arguments to show you why we need to act now. By the end, you'll get just how serious this is and see what each of us can do to help save our world for future generations. So stick with me as we dive into global warming and the steps we can take to build a more sustainable future.

The Causes of Global Warming

Global warming is complicated, with effects that reach far and wide. One major cause? The rise in greenhouse gases mostly from stuff like burning fossil fuels and cutting down trees. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says these emissions have pushed global temps way up over the last hundred years. This has led to ice caps melting, sea levels rising, and crazy weather becoming more frequent. Scientists agree: if we don't change course, the results will be catastrophic for both nature and humans.

Health Risks from Global Warming

Besides hurting the environment, global warming's bad news for our health too. Heatwaves, lousy air quality, and diseases spread by bugs are just some of the risks tied to climate change. Those most vulnerable — like older folks, kids, and low-income communities — are at an even higher risk. The World Health Organization says climate change already causes tens of thousands of deaths yearly, with millions more at risk in the future. As temps continue to climb, these health problems will only get worse unless we act now.

The Economic Impact of Climate Change

The money side of global warming is shocking too. From damage to roads and buildings from extreme weather to farming disruptions because of changing climates — we're already feeling the economic strain worldwide. A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that if we don’t cut emissions soon, climate change could cost up to 10% of global GDP by century's end. This would impact businesses, governments, and everyday people alike.

Social Justice Issues in Global Warming

While tackling global warming challenges, we can't ignore the social justice aspect either. Marginalized communities suffer disproportionately from climate change effects even though they contribute the least to it all. Indigenous groups, people of color, and those with low incomes often face environmental issues first-hand — showing how climate justice intersects with other inequalities.
