CSSD is made up of three zone which soiled zone, clean zone, sterile zone and two barriers which are primary by washer disinfectors and secondary by row of sterilizers. As this layout and material flow ensure minimum contamination of the sterile products. During CSSD, the following two main elements need to be taken into account are the movement of the staff within CSSD and the flow of the re-usable medical devices and consumables. Soiled zone include receiving area, cleansing area and disinfection area. In cleansing area, it include decontaminating area, manual washing area and ultrasonic cleaning area while disinfection area also include automated washing area and automated cart washer. In clean zone include inspection, assembly and packing area, documentation and label printing area, clean stores, sterilizer loading area, sterilizer room. In sterile zone include sterilizers, cooling area, sterile store and sterile item issuing area.
In receiving area, it should be at the entrance to CSSD which also secured in order to prevent any unauthorized access. Besides that, there also a red line to be drawn on the floor to designate the beginning of the area for the soiled trolleys and materials to enter. In the area, it includes computer with CDDS management software, uninterruptable power supply for computer, bar code scanner, stainless steel tables and moveable stools. At the transfer hatch, the hatches should be able to close as to create an airlock to minimize air movement between soiled zone and clean zone.
