How Should Be Arranged The Central Sterile Services Department (cssd)

CSSD is made up of three zone which soiled zone, clean zone, sterile zone and two barriers which are primary by washer disinfectors and secondary by row of sterilizers. As this layout and material flow ensure minimum contamination of the sterile products. During CSSD, the following two main elements need to be taken into account are the movement of the staff within CSSD and the flow of the re-usable medical devices and consumables. Soiled zone include receiving area, cleansing area and disinfection area. In cleansing area, it include decontaminating area, manual washing area and ultrasonic cleaning area while disinfection area also include automated washing area and automated cart washer. In clean zone include inspection, assembly and packing area, documentation and label printing area, clean stores, sterilizer loading area, sterilizer room. In sterile zone include sterilizers, cooling area, sterile store and sterile item issuing area.

In receiving area, it should be at the entrance to CSSD which also secured in order to prevent any unauthorized access. Besides that, there also a red line to be drawn on the floor to designate the beginning of the area for the soiled trolleys and materials to enter. In the area, it includes computer with CDDS management software, uninterruptable power supply for computer, bar code scanner, stainless steel tables and moveable stools. In decontamination area is identified and labeled as “Biohazard Instruments”. It also have some space for foo operated clinical waste bins. Manual cleaning area is adjacent to decontamination area that have all the equipment in the decontamination area and special equipment such as spray gun at sink to facilitate cleaning area of lumens. Engineering services also nee cold water supply and medical air for cleaning.

For a good ultrasonic cleaning, the ultrasonic cleaner should have interlock lid and thermostatically control heaters or hot water boiler. It also need rack with baskets to keep the equipment and fixtures. Moreover, engineering services also required deionized water, switch socket outlets, water outlet and hot water boiler.

Water disinfector need dedicated floor that mounted conveyor line and also sufficiently ventilated in order to remove heat ad smell from disinfecting agents. In that area, it need s transfer trolleys and conveyor lines as transporting equipment. Engineering services also required domestic hot and cold water supply, de-ionized water, switch socket outlets, water outlet and intercom.

Cart washer required a dedicated room that adjoining the cart washer to accommodate the boiler and air compressor. This room can either come as part of the cart washer package or is dedicated faculty. It also need sufficient space provided around the equipment for inspection and repairs while the access doors should be sized appropriately to allow complete replacement of the equipment. There should be also a water jet facility for the cleaning of the washer disinfector. It required dedicated steam boiler and compressed air. Engineering services required domestic hot and cold water supply, switch socket outlets, waste water outlet and water jet facility.

At the transfer hatch, the hatches should be able to close as to create an airlock to minimize air movement between soiled zone and clean zone. Besides that, it also need dedicated floor mounted conveyor lines are placed at the transfer hatch. Moreover, it also need stainless steel conveyor lines at that area. Engineering services also require intercom for the staff to communicate between the two zones.

The medical drying cabinet should be have sufficient space at the back of the dryer for proper air circulation. There are no any specific equipment in this category area. The engineering services always need required switch socket outlet.

Documentation and label printing area are the propriety software for CSSD management. It required some equipment such as computer, printer for checklist, label printer and scanner, uninterruptible power supply (UPS), stainless steel table and movable stool. Engineering services required switch socket outlets for computer, printer, scanner, data line for network, intercom and telephone connection.

At inspection, assembly, and packing area, it need sufficiently size and suitable arranged. Windows to the outside are not necessary but it must be sealed when needed. The internal walls and doors need to have vision panel. Moreover, the area should be under positive pressure differential with respect to adjacent areas. Besides that, there are few equipment need in that area such as adjustable height, stainless steel packing tables and stools, stainless steel storage and wrapper racks, stainless steel wire containers or plastic, table lamp with light and magnifier, mobile, high adjustable stools, stainless steel trolleys. There also two type rotary heat sealing machine which the first one for high temperature and high pressure pouches and second for low temperature pouches. Engineering services also require assembly area to be designed for a Class A clean room. Besides that, the natural lightning is not a must but should be in place at the assembly tables where the item inspected. The switch socket outlets are also required for task lightning.
