Before I walk out of my house, while I am putting my shoes on, I always stare at the picture that hanged on the wall for a minute before going outside. I get used to this habit since I was a little child. I am always curious what is that picture about and who is the artist? Then one day, when my mother was about to clean the picture, I asked her the question that always stuck in my head that I never had a chance to ask before. And her answer shocked me.
She told me that she created this picture while she got pregnant of me and she made it with love and joy. Her words leads me to the words of Mother Teresa, Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary, assert that “Love begins by taking care of the closest ones - the ones at home. ”. Therefore, in my opinion, this picture has a special connection to my life not only my mother made it for me but also I had promised her to take a good care of it. Someone might claim that ‘Mom’ is just a tiny word that have a powerful meaning. Even myself, I always search for vocabularies that I want to know the true meanings in the dictionary but this one word I never want to find the meaning. Likewise, no dictionary can explain this word completely and truthfully. Mother is just an ordinary woman but she is so special to her child. She just not only be everything for her children, but also can give everything for them. My mom have a lot of hobbies which is reading books, watching movies, baking cakes including making cross stitch pictures. If you asked me what I think which is her favourite hobby, I would say definitely doing a cross stitch is her favourite one.
As I grew up, I always remembered seeing my mom cross stitch’s work from a tiny striped on a handkerchief, a frame clock till a large picture. Also, when she was pregnant me, she was doing a huge picture of a cross stitch work. And now, at the present time, this picture is as old as me. It’s about 19 years old. This cross stitch picture tells us about Thai ancient time when Thai people still lived by the camels. Every time I look at this picture, I can see the details of the heedfulness of my mom. I can say that she was very neat and clean while she was doing this picture and I can assure that this was the only one picture in the world that cannot be imitated. Obviously, I can imagine every step my mom doing this masterpiece. She began by selecting the image, tracing it on a huge cloth and gradually thread a needle through the cloth. The picture illustrated about Thai culture. Thai people usually lived in a house near a river and used the small boat as a transportation. Thai houses were also lifted up with high columns to prevent the flood. When the time passed by, this picture turns yellow and looks old. But it still looks nice for me because all the details and the colour texture in this picture reveals the love and the devotion of my Mom to her work. No matter how old this picture is, but it is a precious and worthy thing for me that I will keep with me forever. Last but not least, in our society, we can see that people usually pass on a meaningful object to their child or grandchild not only to protect the object but also create a bond between them. From my observation in class, most of my friends bring an object that passed on by their parent more than my friends who got an object that handed by their friends.
So, I can summarise that the object that was handed over by a generation through a generation usually have a significant meaning toward the owner and sometime gives spiritually value to their family. It is not a traditional nor a cultural but it is a kind of a respect for a child to keep the object to remind them of their ancestor. So, I promise to mother that I will keep this picture with me in the future maybe hanging it in my new house. In conclusion, this picture might not give a much meaning to other people but for me it gave me a special connection between my mother and I. Because this picture is the only one thing in the world that is priceless to me.
In the future, I want to create something for my own child and pass it to them to remind them how much I love them. A child is the mirror of the parents not only the genetic that the parents passed on to their child but also the collector of all the significant objects that their parent left them behind as their beloved memento.
