The four words Kevin Land's Landless Land can illustrate should be emotionally, firmly, and unbeaten.
The main character, accompanied by travel reading, is Allan Hayward, a second officer of the Newfoundland Regiment. Along with him was Clarke, who was his closest friend, and the youngest in the war, Martin, who was always quick. Along with a colorful cast of other supporting characters, Kevin Major takes the reader on a journey through tense moments leading up to the Battle of the Somme in his novel.
Kevin Major is a novelist with a great eye for imagery and rich, fitting language. In chapter twenty-six, he described the fire of the enemy's gun to be "[l] a demonic sword" (Major, 2023, p. 246). He describes with perfect, detailed precision the movement of troops, the places where events occurred, and the emotions of characters involved in different scenes. Even the narrators speak in almost entirely vivid languages that they do not need words thanks to Major's use of such vivid and complete descriptions. It is also evident throughout the novel that the author conducted a significant amount of research for this particular novel.
There are lines of French dialogue while men were based in Louvencourt, adding another layer of complexity to a simple reading for those who do not speak French. He also carefully uses the language that army men and the men who grew up at that time would have used. No modern references or modern slang words are present. These are all slang words of the early 20th century. Also, each of the characters speaks differently depending on whom they are speaking with. Hayward is more honest and cautious when he speaks to his superior than when he responds to his peers or talks to his friends.
However, in general, Hayward's character is one of pride in his appearance and the way he presents himself, speaking in a very noble manner. Unless Clarke ignores his buttons or answers the enemy, Hayward remains composed. This character development is crucial as it reveals the complexities and challenges faced by individuals during wartime, emphasizing the internal and external battles they encounter.
Kevin Major's Landless Land not only provides a gripping narrative of historical events but also delves deeply into the human experience during wartime. Through rich language and well-researched details, the novel brings to life the emotions and struggles of its characters, making it a profound and engaging read.
