Getting water on Mars will be a challenging task. However, in the North Pole of Mars, there is a mix between ice and dry ice (co2). Scientists discovered this on a simple mission when they sent the spacecraft Phoenix to the north pole where it took some simple scientific experiments. It simply dug a small hole over some of the ice. The ice evaporated over a couple days proving that it is water as the carbon would be able to last longer. Research has found the soil on Mars consists of 1-60% water. Orbiters have also told us that there is plenty of water underground. If all of the water came out, research tells us that most of the land would be covered in 20 to 30 feet of water.

There is also a device which is like a dehumidifier. As the mars atmosphere often consists of 100% humidity you will be able to extract water from the air. Sheltering on Mars is going to be a troubling process in order to find good shelter. Due to high amounts of dust storms, you will need to take shelter high off the ground occasionally 60 kilometers off the ground! If you are caught in one of these major dust storms your out of luck as the highest point in mars and the universe is Olympus Mons which stands only 24 kilometers above the mars aroid (the equivalent to sea level). You will need to bring heavy materials with lots of support. you will also want to land on this mountain if you want your best chance of surviving. If you don’t happen to land there, you will need some sort of way to tug all of your resources up the mountain.

Personally, I’d much rather stay on earth than go through all this trouble. The material on Mars is said to make good brick. You combine the brick with polyester and you can get some really strong walls which will then hopefully be able to survive the dust storms. I believe this will take a long time and be risky, but it is worth it. Getting air on Mars will be a troubling process… unless you know what you are doing. Nasa and a scientist from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), have figured out a way in a system to make mars air breathable. If you don’t want to take this small machine with you, you will need to bring oxygen up with you and continuously have people bring it up and deliver it to you. Personally, This box is a great invention and will make the process much easier. Needing to know if the system will actually be able to create enough air to allow a human to breathe will be another thing to do. Enter MARS 2020 Rover which will be going on the 8 month trip to Mars in order to apply new testings and test this bad boy out. I believe that this is the right thing to do before practically kicking someone off Earth without any knowledge if they can breathe. Props to the Mars 2020 and Atlas for getting him up there.
