Nearly seven million students in K-12 miss an estimated amount of eighteen days each school term. Research shows that student achievement suffers after only five absences. Students who miss more than ten days of school are more than twenty percent less likely to graduate from high school than their peers and are twenty-five percent less likely of ever enrolling in any type of college. As a student with a previous history of medical declinations, school was not always my initial priority. Despite my consecutive absences being excused by the state of law, consequently setting up obstacles within my academic career. Since my freshman year I have missed on average at least four-six weeks every year due to surgeries, hospital stays and therapeutic sessions. Granted that I was set back physically from osteochondroma in several parts of my body, and mentally from severe depression and anxiety, there was always one thing that remained within, and it was the strive to reach my career goal.
Anything worth having in life takes a multitude of hard work and dedication. An education is the most powerful thing someone could carry with them for the rest of their life because once you have it, you are in destructible and nobody can take that away. As a young child I have had the desire to help others that I can who cross in my path. I was inspired by my teachers to pay it forward to the upcoming generation and become an educator. Every day we are learning something new and it all starts with an educator of some sort. Through-out my high school experience my teachers have been very understanding and encouraging to follow what you believe in no matter what obstacle comes your way. I had developed several tumors resulting in multiple surgeries to remove them resulting me in being absent medically for weeks to recover. As a result of being absent I fell behind incredibly in school lessening my interest to continue to thrive through high school as an honor roll student. As well as my on-going physical declinations I had mentally started to fail myself landing myself a front row seat in a mental facility and unenrolled from my home campus. In order to help myself, I had to learn who I was and where I wanted to be. If I were to give up, I would have never been able to get even close to living my dream. Through my acts of perseverance, I feel as though I should deserve this scholarship for education as I have a strong inner skill of determination and am wanting to pay my knowledge forward and become a teacher.
Experiences gained from the last four years have shaped me into a strong individual with an even stronger love for her future career in Education. While academics have not always been my strongest suit, I have gained knowledge through experiences and setbacks. As an educator you will be placed into variated scenarios that force you to explore new ideas and aspects of life. You will be thrown into situations with nothing but your set of skills, and it is survival of the fittest after that. I feel that through my experiences I deserve this scholarship because I am going into the Education field and have durability skills to maintain any given situation I am faced with.
