Memories are important in many different aspects. Whether it be in your personal life, academic life, or social life, memories are a necessity for growth. Humans use their memories to progress relationships, learning, and their mental well-being. Memories are a way to use your life experiences to better understand where you came from and where to go. Memories become more important as you age, and recognizing why memories are valuable will make you a better person all around.
Scientifically, memory is a necessity for growth. Without memory, we would not be able to create or understand things in the world around us. Humans have been able to create incredible works and technology because of our ability to remember things. We are able to retain what we have learned and teach others, which in turn has advanced research and knowledge in every subject. We can also take our personal experiences and teach others how to succeed. We can use our mistakes and misfortunes to show others where we went wrong to prevent them from making the same mistakes. This ability to learn from the past is a cornerstone of human development.
Memories are also crucial when remembering someone who has passed or has even just left our lives. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a great example of how memories are used to preserve the lives of the deceased. This celebration is often associated with skull makeup and costumes, but the main intent of the event is to celebrate and commemorate the lives of those we have lost. By remembering the good and telling stories of the deceased, we can bring some peace and happiness to what can be a very dark time. Memories are often the only things we have left of a person once they are gone. We can do this even with people who have left our lives for one reason or another. Friendships can end for a variety of reasons, which can be very heartbreaking, but instead of focusing on the unfortunate loss, we can use our memories to celebrate the friendship that was once there. Memories allow for painful moments to become sweeter rather than remaining entirely bitter.
Along with bringing joy, memories can create a bond. As time goes on and as life-changing moments happen, people can relate and grow closer by going through the same life experiences. Memories allow friends to laugh and understand each other in greater depth. People are able to analyze past experiences to better understand what makes the people in their lives who they are. Memories between friends can help identify what makes their friendship important and what has happened to bond them forever. Being that friendships can sometimes go through a rocky time, these memories can help promote forgiveness and remind those involved why the friendship is worth fighting for. In this way, memories can act as a glue that holds relationships together.
Life can be extremely hard sometimes. No matter who you are, where you come from, or what your age is, devastation can happen. It can be very hard when you are going through a difficult time to remember life is good. Our memories allow us to retrieve good moments to help promote positive thinking and supply hope for the future. Without memories, it would be impossible to remember why life is good and worth living. Our memories allow us to help make sense of the negative by contrasting it to the positive. It reminds us that there are better things to come and that the unhappiness will not last forever. Memories serve as a beacon of hope in our darkest moments.
Together, these examples provide reason and evidence as to why memories are important for growth. The ability to retain information and use memories to your advantage is such an important, valuable thing that we must not take for granted. As life progresses and you gain more life experiences, the collective memories start to identify who you are and allow you to change and take steps in becoming who you want to be. Without memories, the world would be a darker, more ignorant place. Memories bring light in the darkness and strengthen humans in order to remain happy and feel worthy.
