Digital marketing is when companies use a number of different digital methods of connecting and advertising to their customers who spend a lot of their time online.
Some examples of traditional marketing include; newspapers, magazines, mailbox flyers, TV or radio commercials. Examples of digital marketing however are; websites or advertising through different social media platforms for example: Facebook, twitter or YouTube etc. An advantage of traditional marketing is that it is easier to reach your local audience when using traditional marketing. Examples of traditional marketing is things such as radio ads or flyers in the mail. With traditional marketing most pieces of marketing can be kept and audiences will look at them over and over for example mailbox flyers may not be thrown away straight away and therefore will be looked at over and over and may cause a customer to buy whatever is being advertised.
Traditional marketing techniques are also often easier to understand than digital marketing techniques this is because audience have usually already been exposed to traditional marketing techniques therefore when they see this type of strategy being used it is easier for them to understand. However, though there are some disadvantages to traditional marketing, one downside to using traditional marketing is that when using traditional marketing there isn’t really any interaction between the type of traditional marketing method used and the audience, this is why traditional marketing methods are often used to provide information to the public about what is being advertised and the brand. Also some traditional marketing techniques that are used for example radio advertisements and print advertising can often be extremely costly, as not only do the company have to pay to print the materials they also have to get people to distribute them. Lastly Traditional isn’t easy to measure therefore it will be hard for companies to measure how successful there traditional marketing campaigns were.
Whilst traditional marketing campaigns are often considered to more passive, digital marketing campaigns are usually more active and tend to actively involve the target audience. This allows for the two marketing campaigns to complement each other as the traditional marketing campaigns can be used for companies to provide information on products and the brand and the digital marketing campaigns can be used to interact with the target audience and increase brand loyalty and awareness and products awareness and loyalty.
Also using both traditional and digital marketing campaigns allows companies to advertise themselves through multiple different channels allowing for maximum effectiveness as the company is able to reach a larger amount of people, as different types of marketing campaigns work better on some people than other for example a younger audience will be exposed to digital marketing campaigns more as they will use social media, and traditional marketing campaigns such as mailbox flyers will be more effective for the older community as they will be actively checking mail, this is why using both methods is effective company as it allows them to advertise to a larger number of people.
However, there is also a lot of benefits to digital marketing an example of an advantage of traditional marketing is that not only does digital marketing target a local audience, digital marketing can be used and often is used to target international audiences. Also in addition to this digital marketing campaigns can also be used to target specific target audiences as well as they can be modified to target specific genders, locations and interests resulting in campaigns being more effective as there is a specific target audience. Also due to the fact that traditional marketing campaigns such as mailbox flyers can often be an annoyance as audiences often do not have interest in these campaigns or didn’t ask to receive these advertisements, however with digital marketing techniques audience often opt in to being contacted by companies for advertisements therefore making the advertising more effective as the audiences are most interested in it as they asked for it.
Digital marketing also allows companies to interact with their target audiences with the use of social media, most digital marketing campaigns often have the company interact with their target audience. Traditional marketing campaigns don’t usually allow for companies to interact with their audiences. This makes digital marketing campaigns effective as it allows companies to encourage their customers to visit their websites, buy their products etc. Even though sometimes paid ads online can be expensive most digital marketing techniques are often cheaper than traditional marketing techniques.
Digital marketing techniques are also a lot easier for companies to measure the effectiveness off, this is because their often tools provided by most social media networks that allow companies to check the data and results of their campaigns this is more effective than some traditional marketing campaigns as it allows companies to see what is working for them and allows them to adapt and improve their campaigns. Digital marketing campaigns can also be good for smaller lesser known companies this is because as long as a company has a solid strategy they will be able to compete with the biggest companies.
