Imagine you are about to give a speech in front of all the peers you see every day. You are nervous and you have quite a bit of stress leading up to presentation. After the presentation is over you feel the stress start to fade away. For three percent of population this stress doesn’t go away and what made the stress isn’t even brought on by specific event. Over time anxiety can cause things like chest pains or nightmares, sometimes anxiety is so severe that it causes a child to be anxious about everyday things like going to school or even hanging out with friends and possible spending the night.
The unknown becomes more and more scary to the child and they worry more and more about something that does not need to be worried about so much. Individuals with Generalized anxiety disorder feel this way almost all the time. Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by persistent and excessive worry about a number of different things. People with GAD worry and often over think things such as disasters and could also be overly concerned about a number of different things like school, health, danger and other issues. Children with GAD can have a difficult time trying to control their anxiety and can often worrying too much.
They may have excessive anxiety about certain topics or events and anticipate the worst when there is no reason for concern. GAD effects millions children and Women are twice as likely to be affected. Children with GAD tend to have more anxiety often and at a more severe level than other children. Children worry, but children with GAD worry even more. Generalized anxiety disorder has a gradual onset and can begin at any point in an individual’s life, though the highest risk is during childhood, adolescence and middle-age. Although generalized anxiety disorder’s cause is unknown, there is evidence that factors like family history and life experiences, especially stressful ones, play a role in manifesting GAD. For an individual who suffers from GAD, the thought of making it through the day produces symptoms of anxiety.
People with GAD do not know how to stop the cycle of worrying and feel that the worrying is out their control. Most individuals with GAD may realize that their anxiety is far greater than what the situation or even may call for. All anxiety disorders relate to having an unsettled feeling of anxiety when confronted with uncertainty. An individual with Generalized anxiety disorder has a mild to moderate diagnoses, they can function socially and live a meaningful life and they can also be fully employed. many with GAD may avoid putting themselves into certain situations because they try to avoid the stress or anxiety. They may not take advantage of opportunities due to their worry in some social situations, travel, or sports. When the Diagnosis is severe, A child could have issues making it through the day and doing even the simplest of tasks that we do every day. Treatments such as cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) specifically targets thoughts physical symptoms and behaviors including the over preparation, planning, and avoidance that characterizes GAD. Mindfulness based approaches and acceptance commitment therapy have also been investigated with positive outcomes.
All therapies, sometimes in different ways, help people change their relationship to their symptoms. These Treatments help people to understand the nature of anxiety itself and to be less afraid of the presence of anxiety. Also, this helps people make choices that are not affected by the presence of anxiety. The adult CBT treatments have been modified for children and teens and show positive results. There are a number of medication choices for GAD like SSRIs that are either alone or in combination with therapy, relaxation techniques, meditation, yoga exercise, and other holistic alternative treatments that may become part of the treatment plan. Other anxiety disorders such as depression or substance abuse often co-occurs with GAD. Co-occurring conditions must also be treated with appropriate therapies.
