Personal Recommendation: The Hobbit

I choose the book “The Hobbit” because the title really inspired me. On the back of the book was written that it was about a dragon and a hobbit named Bilbo Balings who would get into a very dangerous plot. So I started reading it and it was very amusing!

The Setting

The story takes places in a world named Middle Earth, many creatures live in this world in this world: Hobbits, Wizards, Dwarves, Trolls and a lot more. Some varieties live in peace with each other, but there are also wars. The three main characters are:

1. Bilbo Balings: in the beginning he fears almost everything. He doesn’t dare much and he is a big coward, but at the end of this story he changed into a strong and brave man who fights for his friends.
2. Gandalf: (a wizard) he is a calm and smart person. If there seems no way out (because they are trapped), he always seems to know what to do and how to get out.
3. Thorin Oakenshield: the leader of the dwarves who comes from the mountain Erebor, never afraid, truculent, hates elves, a born leader and strong minded.

Plot

The story started in a place named the Shire. Bilbo Balings lives peaceful in his house when suddenly the wizard Gandalf comes looking for him. Gandalf persuades Bilbo to join the 13 dwarves on their journey to regain the lonely mountain which was captured by the dragon Smaug. On the road the dwarves are captured by goblins. When Bilbo loses the group and falls into a cave, he meets a creature named Gollum. Gollum owns a ring what can make him invisible. On their journey they meet a lot of people (evil and good), but nothing will stop the dwarves from getting back the mountain and killing the dragon. They succeed to kill the dragon Smaug. That means that the dwarves own their treasure again (a lot of money). Thorin is addicted to his money and he doesn’t want to lose it. In the meantime a really big war is going on with the goblins. Everybody fights against them even the elfs. Thorin realises he was wrong and he fights with Azog, the destroyer, he wins and kills him, but he dies as well.

Recommendation

I think The Hobbit is one of the best books I’ve ever read, because the book is very imaginative and because many exciting things happen, for example when the dwarves and Bilbo fight against the dragon Smaug. This book was never boring. It had my interest the whole time, because there were lots of cliffhangers. For example when they are captured by the giants you want to know what happens next. Some parts were difficult to read, because they had difficult words. One of them was fluster I needed to look that up. Overall the book was really nice, good explanations of the characters and of the story line. I would recommend this to everybody, because the book is amazing. It has everything in it action, drama, humor, love, happiness. I think the best part was the part when Bilbo Balings met Gollum in the mountain. I didn’t knew what was going to happen. It was really exciting to read that part.
