Having big dreams is something my parents have ingrained in me since a young age. They regularly tell me I am capable of accomplishing anything I set my mind to, and I have continually instilled this notion in my life. As people grow older, they often lose sight of what truly matters in life and get bogged down by the world’s challenges, therefore, giving up on their dreams. My faith in God, and the joy and encouragement that has stemmed from it provides me the motivation to hold fast to my big dreams, as well as, the ambition to make them possible.
Seattle Pacific has admirably big dreams, too; Engage the Culture and Change the World. Those are not small feats, and this goal is something I genuinely want to be a part of. My passion for helping others, along with a deep love for science, has directed me towards a career in medicine. Recently, some of my dearly loved friends and family have been diagnosed with cancer, or passed away from this awful disease. When my aunt was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor this past summer, the raw truth of sudden illness hit me. Almost immediately, my somewhat vague dreams quickly became clear: I want to aid in any way possible to improve the lives of those impacted by this dreadful disease. By attending Seattle Pacific, I am certain I will receive the excellent education and opportunities that will enable me to see this dream become reality.
To my understanding, education encompasses much more than class work and textbooks. It studies human interactions and the way in which our actions have an effect on our society. We learn from previous experiences and how to be our own teachers in this world to ensure constant meditation on our own impact. This impact leads to change, and something even as big as changing the world does not require a tremendous act by one individual, but rather a collective effort to imagine a better world, as well as, working together to make it happen. Through a career in medicine, or simply being able to connect with and understand individuals’ backgrounds and perspectives, I aim to positively impact as many lives as possible. As a result, this will, hopefully, cause a greater change to occur through those individual’s lives.
Growing up as a pastor’s daughter, I have seen this type of change and impact take place in the multiple congregations, mission projects, and volunteer opportunities I have had the privilege of being a part of, or hearing about. Throughout my life, I have been surrounded by people who support and encourage my faith to grow. Furthermore, I have been blessed to live in many different places with a variety of unique viewpoints. Through this, I have come to appreciate the differences all people have, while also witnessing how the commonality of our faith binds us together. I aspire to find this type of community in college and beyond.
