Food labeling will help in solving the issue of obesity in the country because consumers will be knowledgeable of calorie levels of different products. It will provide consumers with a choice on which food products to consume and which to avoid (Remington, Broconson, and Wegner, 2010). Consumers are entitled to know what they consume making food labeling to ensure that the right decision is upheld. Many American citizens consume food products that they have little knowledge about. Food labels will enable consumers to avoid wasting food products that contain high calorie levels. Some food manufacturers intentionally do not label their products so that consumers can be confused and think that their products are better than others availed in the market (Clifford, 2012). Moreover, the United States should implement the plan of mandatory food labeling because other developed countries have already done so.
Likewise, mandatory food labeling will enable the government to easily track specific food products that cause obesity (Malik, Willett and Hu, 2013). It is difficult for the U.S government to ascertain which food products have contributed to the increase in obesity rates in the country since many food manufacturers and sellers do not label their products. After mandatory food labeling is implemented, the U.S government will only have to assess the composition of different food products to identify those that have high calorie levels, and that is likely to cause obesity (Ogden et al., 2010). Hence, the government will be able to eliminate such products from the market to ensure they do not continue causing obesity among Americans.
Obesity is a significant health concern in America, and the U.S government should implement effective plans to deal with the health issue. Feeding and dietary are the leading cause of obesity in the United States. Increased obesity rates have lowered the life expectancy of Americans and will continue doing so if the government does not establish appropriate and practical strategies to combat the health issue (Remington et al., 2010). The United States government should make it mandatory for food manufactures and sellers to label their products so that American citizens can be more knowledgeable about what they consume.
