Guaranteeing Civil Rights we should continue the fight to end discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, sex, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, or ethnicity. We, as a nation, must always speak out against bigotry and intolerance within our communities and our political system and replace them with civility and love. It is intolerable and inappropriate to target, exclude, discredit, and put individuals at a disadvantage because of their race, national origin, sex, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, or language. While the Constitution fundamentally grants the freedom of expression, we must condemn and denounce heat speech, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia – such as the demonization of Mexicans, Muslims, women, people with disabilities, and the LGBT community – as it generates an environment of violence and limits safe spaces.
Each year on August 26th, we commemorate the day the 19th amendment to the U. S. Constitution was signed into law in 1920, granting women the right to vote. It is of utter importance that we look back on the last 98 years and honor the gains women have procured in favor of women’s suffrage and gender equality; however, we must recognize that women have yet to achieve full equality and freedom within the United States. We should aim on ensuring and maintaining full equality for women and fighting to end sex and gender discrimination within the professions and employment, education, health care, and while accessing good, services, and facilities. We should also continue the fight to eliminate the gender pay gap as individuals should receive equal pay for equal work as well as for the right to abortion as women have a moral right to determine what to do with their bodies.
Following the oral arguments of Obergefell v. Hodges in June 2016, the landmark decision of the Supreme Court ruled in favor of and granted same-sex couples the fundamental right to marry. While marriage equality warrants for celebration, the road to equality remains extensive as there are still many serious issues facing the LGBT community. We must advocate for an end to violence against the LGBT community, especially those of color because they experience disproportionately high rates of violence compared to that of straight cisgender people. Employment discrimination towards the LGBT community is yet another significant factor that inequitably results in on-the-job harassment, mistreatment, and firing as LGBT workers lack federal protection. Employment discrimination also has harmful effects on LGBT workers’ economic wellbeing because it often leads to high rates of unemployment, homelessness, poor health and food insecurity. Discrimination against the LGBT community is social and systematic, particularly within the health care system as LGBT people are more likely to disclose unfulfilled health needs and have difficulty accessing the care and obtaining the insure they need to satisfy their needs.
