Teachers play vital roles in the lives of the students in their classroom.
There are 5 different range of teacher roles. These are: Assesor, Controller, Manager, Materials Producer and Motivator.
The role of an Assessor is important as the assessor will need to monitor and assess the progress of students. The teacher will need to identify and correct errors in order to determine what needs to be done in the following lessons and provide feedback and correction. However, if the assessing teacher is not communicated with sensitivity and support, this could damage the students confidence.
In many educational contexts, the most common teacher role is the one of a Controller. Teachers acting as controllers are in complete charge of the classroom, from what students do to what they say. This is very important to be able to keep discipline within the classroom setting. However the degree of class control must be moderate. If the teacher is unable to be proficient in this role, then this may reflect on the students progress as too much conteol is harmful for creative thinking.
The managing teacher is important within the classroom setting as this role ensures all activities are carried out in the most successful way, and that all students are instructed in the most effective manner. If the teacher is not proficient in this role, this will reflect on the tasks completed. The teacher acts as a coach, provides guidance, and also engages with learners. If the teacher over manages the classroom, it can also lead to a student becoming too dependent or even too comfortable with one teacher and one method of teaching. In the classroom, the teacher is mostly the main focus.
The role of the Materials Producer is a kind of walking rescourse center ready to offer/provide learners in the most sufficient way. The success of many activities can alter with the materials used. The materials producer is important to provide appropriate and often better materials than the course book offers. Lacking a range of materials will make teaching repetitive and less interesting for students.
The role of the Motivator is a vital role in order to encourage students to participate in classroom activities and to strive to be the best they can. Students can sometimes lose concentration or become unsure how to proceed; the motivator in this regard can help in a supportive way. If the teachers acting as motivators are unable to fulfill this role, this may lead to students losing interest and could prove counter-productive to a students self-esteem, making them feel detached from the classroom.
