“Hey you, why don’t you just give up?” “Are you sure this is right for you?” Some things you definitely do not hear from anyone who supports you. Of course, many people will tell you to keep pushing through life or any adversity you may observe. On the other hand, someone I truly respect and love dearly, does not tell me. Paris, my mother, I most admire because she shows me her hard work and character through her actions.
For example, her parents did not allow her to receive an education back in Iraq, but, when she came to America, she educated herself. She did so by watching PBS Kids, and she taught herself how to speak English as she payed close attention to that channel. Because of her actions, she taught me to work for what I want, and she has opened my eyes to a set perspective on education. Although she did not know how to read or write in English, or any other language for that matter, at the time, she passed her American citizenship exam. She, likewise, learned my father’s African language, Dinka, and she passed her driver’s licensing exam. These are a few fascinating examples that I keep remembrance of when I think I cannot do something. On the topic of education, my mother showed me the value of education. If it was not for her hard work, I believe I would not push myself as I should in school.
I have had my fair share of days where I have struggled with my English whether it be in written or verbal form. But never have I had to teach myself a new language with no point of reference. To have no background knowledge in one’s birth language is unbelievable, but my mother found a way to oversee such difficulty. Because of that, I refuse to give up when I think I cannot do something, such as a challenge that seems impossible. It is so easy to just give up, but my mother has proven to me that it is for certain possible to make a better outcome even through the toughest times.
Lastly, she shows me her character. Every time she serves the community, serves the Lord, or gives a helping hand to others, she is showing me her humanity. My mother goes above and beyond to help others as she feels it is never enough for her to give or help. As a result, I follow in her footsteps and volunteer at an after-school program. I assist underserved children ages two to 13 with their homework, play activities, serve snacks, and end it with bible study. Apart from that, I too got to build my character from watching her.
Because my mother championed through it all, it would be a shame for me not to. Never has she complained, nor has she taken anything for granted. All in all, her hard work and character are immensely hard to get a hold of. For this reason, my mother is whom I admire most.
