I am delighted to write this letter of recommendation in support of Yike Cheng’s medical school application. As the volunteer coordinator at the Ottawa Hospital – General Campus, I met Yike back in 2013 when he reached out and started volunteering with us as a high school student. Throughout the years, I have had the opportunity to work with Yike and observe the compassionate efforts and professionalism shown in his volunteering. He has demonstrated excellent ability to work well both individually and within a team.
One of the initiatives that he assisted with was the book sales program, which helped to raise funds for new equipment in the hospital. While interacting with the customers, Yike was always enthusiastic and made sure to communicate in a clear and polite manner. He was also a great team player and worked very effectively with other volunteers when managing the book sale events. For some time, Yike also took on the role of a guide at the information desk. He was able to quickly familiarize himself with the geographical layout of the hospital and I was quite impressed by his adaptability in learning new tasks.
On top of this, I can also tell that Yike cares greatly about the comfort of the patients and their families during their visits to the hospital, as he always eagerly accompanies them to their destinations with a positive attitude. When new volunteer members arrived to team, Yike showed exemplary efforts in his ability to train and lead the volunteers to become comfortable in their new roles at the info desk. Most importantly, I believe Yike has demonstrated throughout his long-term commitment that he is truly compassionate about patient care. He would visit patient wings and provide patients with opportunities of accompanied walks, entertainment, and sometimes a chat when the patients felt lonely. Volunteering in patient care requires a high level of maturity, compassion, and professionalism, and Yike has demonstrated all of this without me having to ever doubt his reliability. In fact, Yike has gone beyond his expected role when he, driven by his passion for music, took the initiative to perform songs on the piano for the entertainment of the patients.
Both the patients and hospital staff highly appreciated Yike’s musical performances, as it provided exciting music and a positive change of pace to the patient’s experience in the hospital. From my experiences working with Yike, I can confirm that he is a great asset to our volunteer team. He clearly strives to not only increase the quality of care for our patients, but also make a positive impact on the lives of others such as the patient’s family members, hospital staff, and volunteers as well. I believe that Yike is a great team collaborator and an intelligent, professional, and diligent individual. For these reasons mentioned, I wholeheartedly recommend him as a well-suited candidate for a future career in medicine.
