My task was to write a research-based argumentative essay for or against health care for everyone, so I chose the side “for” implementing affordable health care policy. The topic of healthcare has been a recurrent political topic in the US since the 1900s. With our most recent presidential election, Americans are once again waiting to learn about potential political issues. Healthcare and its implementation have always been a big debate in previous U.S elections, for better or for worse. The World Health Care Organization states that The United States is the only one of thirty-three developed countries that does not provide universal healthcare. This is a sharp contrast when looking at countries like Canada, UK, France, Germany, and Switzerland.
A large majority of the citizens of the United States are not receiving the appropriate health care that they are entitled to as a right to life. Everyone has a right to live and should not have to choose whether to prioritize their health or their financial status. No one should get sick and die just because their socio-economic status doesn't allow them access to the health care services, they need. Ever since our Declaration of Independence was drafted, our country was built on the belief that everyone is entitled to LIFE, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. This is sadly nowhere near being true if we can’t give our citizens the healthcare that they need. For as long as we deny them this necessity, many will either stay in crippling debt or not receive the treatment they need. This is even seen in cancer patients who are now either delaying or completely avoiding treatment for financial reasons. Even for those who do recover and receive treatment; are we really giving them the right to Liberty and Pursuit Happiness if they stay in debt for the rest of their lives? How is it that a 1st world developed country that promises the “American Dream” allowed to treat most of its citizens like this?
It is very perturbing for Americans to not have access to their essential healthcare. It has become even more relevant now than ever that our healthcare system is failing during this Covid-19 Pandemic. In New York City, the epicenter of the virus, low income neighborhoods with poor access to primary care have suffered from disproportionately high rates of Covid-19. Healthcare is such a blaring issue in the US that the number of uninsured citizens across the country has been progressively growing from 26.7 million in 2016 to 28.9 million in 2019. It was shown in a 1993 study that there’s a 25% higher risk of death for uninsured adults.
Around 63% of US adults now believe that the government has the responsibility of providing healthcare. Most middle class and lower-class citizens suffer the most from the lack of healthcare. The prices for medical services have steadily been increasing at a slightly faster rate going at a 4.6% rate in 2018. This has made a large portion of Americans who aren’t well enough to pay off their own medical bills struggle even more to make ends meet. Some people who are more traditional or much better off will argue against the need for healthcare change. The GOP is pretty against Universal Healthcare because they believe it would raise taxes and maybe even damage the economy. However, in the Republican party some will argue in favor healthcare to at least be more affordable. The Democratic Party is also a bit split on the issue regarding Healthcare. Some progressives like Congresswoman AOC or Senator Bernie Sanders are all in favor of the government providing Universal Healthcare. Other Democratic leaders like soon to be president, Joe Biden, only want healthcare to be more accessible and affordable. It seems that more of the Democratic party leans more towards the latter.
The two branches of the government that can help the most with this issue would have to be the Legislative and Executive branch. Congress can start drawing up new bills and laws that can help increase healthcare coverage for all Americans. This can then be accepted and passed by the Executive branch. With the President’s help these new bills could be enforced. The President can also say the cause by creating acts that help healthcare be more affordable as well.
There are two possible constitutional solutions to our current healthcare problem. We could either expand our current Affordable Care Act and make healthcare generally more accessible and have everyone with a basic coverage, or we could try pushing for a Universal Healthcare system. As state earlier, many other developed countries like Canada, UK, Switzerland, etc. All offer this kind of healthcare. It is clear that the Democratic party is in favor of making corrections to our healthcare. This is one of the many things that drew in many voters in favor of the Democratic Party this election. Many Progressive Americans voted for the party in favor of correcting something that’s a huge apparent issue in their life. It is my right because this goes with the first amendment which is freedom of speech or the right of the people to assemble. This means that I have the right to express my own thoughts of the government. There are many people out there that are not as fortunate as others. What I mean is that not all citizens revive a type of health care plan when I believe we all should. I can’t just stand around and not worry about it because this is a national problem that has been going on for a while. I hope that you align with your party as well and care about helping many Americans across the country. If your intent is not in that direction, then I am more than likely going to have to vote for a Representative that represents my beliefs at a National level. As I know that for a fact, I can relate to having a hard situation of having a good medical health care insurance because of so many expenses my mom has had due to my surgery’s I know that prices increase more and more. I believe that a rich and developed nation like ours should definitely consider a Universal Healthcare for everyone.
