The emergence of online communication has had a significant impact on how society perceives communication and media. This has created a new sphere of social interaction, with new channels of cooperation and coordination, as well as the ability to connect with people all over the world. Social networking platforms like Facebook and Twitter have become increasingly popular, allowing users to share and exchange useful information across distances. These platforms also offer the opportunity to address various issues, including business conferences. However, the spread of online communication and social networking has also given rise to cybercrimes and other problems. Therefore, social networking has both advantages and disadvantages for the global community.
There are numerous advantages that social networking can provide to its users. Firstly, online communities allow users to create chat rooms and find friends who share similar preferences, hobbies, and interests. This constant exchange of knowledge and information helps expand users' perspectives on cultural, social, and political issues, as well as shaping their opinions on specific problems (Shelly and Misty 202). Secondly, social networking platforms offer web conferencing functions that are more beneficial than traditional telephone calls. Participants can interact with each other and exchange specific details, including PowerPoint presentations (Shelly and Misty 202). Web conferencing is advantageous because it allows participants to communicate regardless of distance. Thirdly, social networking provides communication channels that allow participants to achieve their goals while sitting in front of a computer. An obvious advantage of social networking is its association with improvements in the educational sphere. Online learners have the opportunity to study and improve their skills by communicating with peers and teachers from a distance, using platforms like ICQ and Skype (Kear 176). This can increase students' productivity and involve more learners in studying various academic disciplines (Kear 176). Online learning not only increases learner engagement but also contributes to the flexibility of the academic process, which is not possible in traditional schools.
Despite the advantages mentioned above, social networking mechanisms also have certain shortcomings. One major challenge is the submission and exchange of information via virtual devices, especially when this information should not be made public (Shelly and Misty 202). Authenticity and copyright rights are at risk when information is transferred online. Additionally, being addicted to online chat can deprive people of the ability to communicate directly with others, potentially leading to a loss of interpersonal communication skills and negative impacts on mental health. Furthermore, communicating online can sometimes lead to misunderstandings as consensus cannot always be reached. In such situations, face-to-face communication is often the best solution.
In conclusion, social networking can have both positive and negative effects, depending on people's purposes and attitudes towards online communication. On the one hand, it increases the opportunities to connect with people from around the world and expands cultural, social, and political experiences. On the other hand, it can have negative consequences for those who misuse information or invade personal space in the virtual realm. Overall, the emergence of social networking has been beneficial for developing new communication skills within the global community.
