The story Betrayal of Faith by Mark M. Bello is the stunning tale of lawyer Zachary Blake and his plummet from grace. Once a prominent partner in a law firm in the heart of Detroit, Zack’s impending alcoholism forces his business partners in the law firm to fire and sue him to recoup the financial losses that he caused.
Once on top of the litigious world, Zack is reduced to $99 drunk driving cases, much to his embarrassment.Jennifer Tracey is a widow of two adolescent boys who relies strongly on her faith. Her husband died in a work accident two years prior to the start of the book, and it has been a struggle financially and emotionally. The family regularly attends their Catholic church, called the Lakes, and is thrilled when a new pastor named Father Gerry Bartholomew arrives to become a church leader. A tragic series of events involving the Priest and her two boys forces Jennifer to track down her previous lawyer, Zack Blake.
This book becomes a fictional question of ethics, as the Tracey family and Mr. Blake take the Lakes and the Catholic Archdiocese to court. This book is a thrill ride from start to finish, and I enjoyed it immensely. The author does such a great job painting a backdrop of the story, and I felt like I was in the courtroom with the author’s great writing style. I especially liked Jennifer Tracey, who is a tenacious mother who will do whatever is needed to protect her sons. When her faith and love of her church come into question against her family, she stays strong and does the right thing. I especially enjoyed the dialogue between Jennifer and Zack.
Their relationship is intriguing and provides a fun romantic element to the book. This book is the first of a trilogy featuring the lawyer Zachary Blake. These books can be read alone, or together, the order does not matter. This book deserves a warning of sensitive subject material, as it discusses the sodomizing of young boys by an adult male priest. There were many cringe-inducing passages in regards to this matter, but the author covered the subject very tastefully. That being said, if this subject triggers emotions, it would be best not to read.I give Betrayal of Faith 4 out of 4 stars, for its professional editing, excellent storyline, and vivid imagery. I recommend this book to any mature reader looking for a gripping courtroom drama.
