The Benefits of Making Abortions Legal

The controvercy surrounding abortion has been brought to light in the media recently. Abortions are seen as an issue due to the fact that it deliberatly ends the pregnancy before childbirth, therefore killing the fetus. Those who are pro-life believe that the act is immoral and sholld be illegal. Others disagree with this, as it should only impact and bother the woman and her doctor, she should have a choice. The main consequence of this issue is that women need the option to terminate their pregnancy if they need to or choose to. The practice of abortions should not be banned due to the reasons, that women will carry out the procedure on themselvs which is incredibly dangerous, women should have the right over their body and their fetus, and victums of rape shouldn’t be forced to carry their rapists baby.

Women should have the right over their own body and their fetus. It is crazy that 77% of pro-lifers are male, these men will never get pregnant. Abortion should be a matter that only concerns the women and her trusted doctor. While men can make their own choices doesn’t mean they should be able to make decisions for other women’s wombs. Men shouldn’t be able to dictate what happens to a woman’s body and her future. It is completely unreasonable to take this right away from women, these women or even young girls are put under so much pressure to make the right choice for them and their family, if abortions are illegal it puts emence pressure on the girl who can’t carry the baby and must get rid of the fetus. Common reasons for wanting an abortion include, birth control failure, the innability to financialy support a child, to prevent the birth of a child with severe medical issues or to protect the life of the mother.

Abortions should not be banned as women will resort to dangerous methods to terminate their own pregnacies without medical help, prohibiting abortion does not deminish the act. Around 25 million unsafe at home abortions were estimated to have taken place world wide each year according to World Health Organisation. These deaths are usually caused by women inserting sharp objects, commonly a knitting needle or a sharp straightened out coat hanger to break the amniotic sac inside the womb. Others overdose on drugs in an attempt to kill the fetus but in most circumstances the mother dies as well. Even swallowing gun powder or bathing in scalding hot water are methods to kill the fetus. Women need clinics and medical experts to help terminate their pregnancies otherwise the mother can seriously harm themselves or could be fatal. Furthermore, hundreds of thousands of women who suffer from life threatening diseases such as heart disease, sickle-cell anemia,diabetes and hypertension have been saved from ongoing health complications that would arise trough pregnancy and childbirth through the accessibility of safe, legal abortions.
