As Trump’s presidency continues to go on it is faced with the daunting task of curing the opioid epidemic that plagues the world of today. With that come questions about whether he is keeping his promises and helping America grow stronger as a country. Persecuting Trump to no end, Michael Cooper, Jr. speaks of all of his ill doings while also listing his unaccomplished promises that he made during his election. Cooper’s continues bagging on trump shows of a community who believes that he has betrayed his voters and is urging people to see the truth where it is hidden by trump’s lies so that America as a whole can heal.
Cooper starts off his essay by clearly stating his thoughts about what Trump has done with his time in office. Bluntly stating that he has “lied to Americans who desperately wanted his help.” The help they want is for the government to fix the issues that haunt Americans; the opioid epidemic that hurts thousands and a tax reform that was supposed to be in place by now. This direct statement shows that reader Coopers blunt feelings and gives them context about what the rest of his essay will be about.
While giving trumps location and what he is doing, Cooper states what he believes to be the actual truth about the president. While at the rally in “Huntington, West Virginia” Cooper believes that the president was hiding the fact that “he's failing them.” Them being his supporters and the people at his rally. His strategy of stating Trumps location and the fact that he is keeping the truth from his people shows the reader that Cooper knows what he is talking about as he provides a fact of where trump is. His use of saying that Trump has been failing his followers gives the reader context about the reading and shows the main theme that will be shown in the essay.
Cooper then goes on to use repetition by listing the things our leader is failing at. The Appalachia, the Rust Belt and “the forgotten man, the working-class and the voters” are all things that Trump is failing at in the eyes of Cooper. Voters being a big deal as they are his base and something he can't lose. His listing of “charges” is an attempt to make the reader vexed or irritated about all of Trumps supposed of failures. His use of repetition is to show the reader the multitude of his wrongdoings again trying to rile the reader up.
Starting with his campaign promise, Cooper gives information about multiple things he thinks Trump has failed at. Talking about his campaign Cooper supplies the reader with a fact about how “Trump promised $1 trillion in infrastructure investments and they are nowhere in sight” because he hasn't been able to pass a bill. With this fact, Cooper includes a source link directly pasted in the paragraph. This listing of facts and having direct sources goes on for four paragraphs each having a new charge against him. Cooper’s use of citing direct sources, gives the reader a sense of credibility as each source proves an actual fact. His source’s though does include a few that could be unreliable and bias towards this topic.
Copper takes a break from relentlessly citing sources and goes on to talk about a crime he committed against America. The crime being Trump telling America that “The old economy was coming back.” Something that would help “the textile towns and coal communities of America compete in the global economy.” Him expressing this wrongdoing makes the reader feel betrayed by our president and angered. This helps to persuade the reader to think that Trump is doing the dishonest deed.
Further along in his writing Cooper uses a parallelism to show the correlation between two of his points. Cooper gives an example of how Americans didn't need Trump selling things that “Americans didn't need.” He then proceeds to say the “The con ended in the White House. And now Americans do need him.” The parallelism between the two creates a sense of urgency and the italics on doing shows significance and is emphasizing his point about the topic. This helps to convince the reader to agree with his main statement.
In his final paragraph, Cooper decides to bash trump once more. The fact that our president has continued to use twitter bugs Cooper and he talks down to Trump and believes that after the rally is over the president “will go back to Washington.” He'll forget about West Virginia. He'll wake up tomorrow and he’ll turn on “Fox & Friends and he'll tweet about himself.” This references Trump's childish side and it's a weak part of his personality. Cooper uses this to remind the reader of not just his wrong doings but what others believe isn't right. Ending the essay like this leaves the reader with the thought of dislike towards trump and makes the reader more convinced than ever in the essay.
