The Career of The Rapper Robert Rihmeek Williams Known as "Meek Mill"

Robert Rihmeek Williams, professionally known as “Meek Mill” was born on May 6th, 1987 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He then began his career as a battle rapper, then formed the “Bloodhoundz” rap group briefly in 2008. Mill signed to TI’s label “Grand Hustle Records”, however later signed to Rick Ross’ label “Maybach Music Group”. Mill then made multiple of switches from record labels but then moved back to Rick Ross’ label and made his debut album titled “Dreams and Nightmares” in 2012. Mill, later on in 2014 then released one of his most popular songs “Young and Gettin it” which rose to number 2 on the Billboard hot 100. Since then Meek Mill is one of the most successful rappers of his time. Mill has formed his own record label called “Dream Chasers Records” which he himself manages. Meek Mill has now a net worth of 12 million USD, and is currently in the process of making new music.

Customer Analysis

I looked on Instagram to find information on the customer analysis. I found that most of Meek’s followers were teenagers and above, which is fair seeing as though his music does have explicit language. The range seemed to conclude that his fanbase is typically 14+. I also noticed there isn’t a specific target gender, ethnicity, or religion, his music is simply controversial and made for all ears that are open to it. He does discuss police injustices and infractions, as well as growing up in the projects which entices people who have gone through or take interest in these topics to listen. His graphic t-shirts reading “Free my dawgs!” and “Guilty until proven innocent” are targeted at those individuals.

Puma fans are also a target as Meek has a hoodie collaboration with the company, entailing that even if people do not necessarily know Meek as well, the fact that there is a Puma label on it will catch their eye.

Competition

Meek Mill’s products that he sells to the public are: t-shirts, hoodies, hats, and posters. Meek Mill’s best selling products are his hoodies according to his website, and they range in price from $58.00 - $110.00. I believe that his competition is anyone that is selling the same or similar products as Mill. By doing research, I found that there are numerous retail stores that sell hoodies just like Meek Mill. I will just name a few that are the most popular and probably the most likely to be competing with Meek Mill right now.

Walmart is Meek Mill’s competitor since they have hoodies but for a much cheaper price. Walmart sells mens/womens hoodies for around $9.99 - $80.00. People who shop at Walmart are parents who may have kids. The parents would want to buy hoodies from Walmart since they don’t have to pay as much. The kids might be Meek Mill fans, but their parents might not want to spend a lot on hoodies.

Hollister is Meek Mill’s competitor also since they have hoodies that target roughly the same market that Meek Mill’s fans are. Hollister sells mens/womens hoodies for an affordable price, much like how Walmart does. People who shop at Hollister are teens and young adults. They most likely are Meek Mill fans, but would shop at hollister since it is more affordable clothing.

Next, is Adidas. They have athletic wear. Adidas has hoodies similar to Meek Mill since he is an ambassador for Puma. (PUMA X MEEK MILL). Since 2012, Meek Mill has been teamed up with Puma and has been designing athletic wear together. Adidas and Puma are owned by the same company and create a big competition between each other. People who shop at Adidas are from all ages and lots of them could be Meek Mill fans. Since Adidas and Meek Mills cost of hoodies are very similar, I would say it comes down to who is more popular.

Nike, like Adidas is the athletic wear popular companies. All three of them are probably Meek Mills most fierce competitors. Nike’s customers are from all ages and might be Meek Mill fans. People who shop at Nike are probably into or injoy sports or wearing athletic clothing. The cost of a Meek Mill hoodies are around $58.00 - $110.00, while Nike’s cost of hoodies are $51.00 - $270.00. Since Meek Mill has a Puma clothing line, Meek Mills hoodies are a little more affordable and if anyone is a Meek Mill fan, they can wear his hoodies and still be wearing athletic clothing.

OVO, or October’s Very Own, is Drake’s clothing company. Drake, like Meek Mill is a rapper and both have designed clothing. OVO is for all ages, unisex and more on the pricey side. A hoodie is priced at $168.00, and some hoodies can be almost $300.00, but still they are sold out most of the time. The DC4 hoodie promotes the album and spreads the image of the cover along with the message behind it that Meek raps to send - that growing up in the projects you have the underhand, and the police only make it worse. The “Free Meek’ sweater highlights who his real fans are as he was recently incarcerated and needed support during that time. The Puma hoodie is extremely promotional as Puma fans may take an interest in the hoodie, and eventually learn more about Meek. The two accessories being sold are DC hats, and Meek x Monster gold headphones. By selling DC hats, Meek’s label imprint and album are all being represented by two simple letters. People that regularly shop at Monster will be more inclined to buy Meek’s headphones knowing that Monster was involved and vice versa. This can also draw in plain old music lovers looking for a new set of headphones with some shine. It was the most popular album he has made. We thought to choose this feature since most Meek Mill fans would recognise the song and album as the first one he made and would make them very excited and like Meek Mill even more. On the title page it also has the text “I used to pray for times like this…” which is a reference to the lyrics of the song. This shows how far Meek has come as his prayers have been answered, and draws in the viewer even more as fans will be able to recognize the lyrics, and newcomers will connect them to the song.
