The influence of teachers is often not immediately noticeable, but rather becomes apparent over time as students demonstrate their abilities and skills that were identified and nurtured by their teachers. The development of personality and character often hinges on how successfully a teacher can connect with their students and help them achieve their goals. When asked about a person who played a pivotal role in developing my interest in medicine and setting a specific career goal, I immediately think of my biology teacher, Mr. N. His involvement in my life not only helped me decide on a future profession, but also enabled me to assess my strengths and work towards success in stages.
During my high school years, I struggled to determine which profession I wanted to pursue. While I wasn't particularly interested in exact sciences, I did possess a curiosity for natural disciplines. However, it wasn't until I became a student in Mr. N.'s class that I truly understood the power of dedication. Our teacher consistently provided guidance, not just in academics but also in other areas of life. Our conversations left lasting impressions on me, showcasing how an ordinary teacher can effortlessly discuss complex subjects. Through Mr. N.'s involvement, I gained a deeper understanding of the medical field, its significance, and the potential benefits of working in this sphere. As highlighted by Gibson et al., a teacher's attitude towards their students shapes their worldview and influences their interests, which can later prove useful in their professional lives (166). Mr. N.'s assistance was invaluable, and I am forever grateful to him.
Reflecting on my conversations with Mr. N., I realize that he did not impose concrete ideas or theories upon us. Instead, he encouraged us to think, choose, and contemplate what truly mattered. It was through these conversations that I eventually decided to pursue nursing as my main profession. Biology is closely intertwined with medicine, and Mr. N. did everything in his power to help me succeed and foster my passion for this field. Moreover, I noticed a change within myself after interacting with him. I gained confidence and developed a laser focus on my goals. Mr. N. can rightfully be considered my mentor teacher. According to Goodwin et al., effective learning occurs when students trust and are willing to follow the instructions of their mentor teachers (1201). Thanks to Mr. N.'s guidance, I became a student in the nursing field and I am indebted to him for the impact he had on my personal growth.
The involvement of the teacher I have described in my life was significant. It was due to his support that I chose nursing as my career path and was able to effectively work towards my goals. Mr. N. not only assisted me in making the decision to pursue nursing, but also prompted me to reassess my priorities. His influence made me believe in my ability to achieve success through hard work. Today, I recognize that Mr. N. was and will continue to be one of my main life mentors.
