Can you imagine that twenty-five years have passed since the first ever smartphone was invented? The Simon Personal Communicator was created in 1992 by IBM. It was the first device that performed functions of a computer with its ability to run software applications and was capable of sending emails, faxes and record dates through calendars, rather than simply sending messages and making calls.
In this era of technology and internet, smartphones have impacted us tremendously proving to be most beneficial in business and education. With mobile computing features, the smartphone provides improved convenience, accessibility and also fosters communication but however not taking into consideration the detrimental effect it can have on us if it's misused as it serves as a distraction resulting in decreased productivity. It was not until 2007 when Apple hit the mainstream by releasing its first iPhone that a revolutionary upgrade in technological advancement was detected. Smartphones play an important role in facilitating students as it enhances the educational experience by providing enhanced learning services. The iPhone’s features allow knowledge to be expanded and distributed much faster because of its capabilities. With this modern technological innovation, students no longer have to face these challenges as with one click of a button students can have instant access to a wide range of information from online libraries, books and so on.
Educational professionals are also reaping the benefits of learning new techniques by using these gadgets as well as Mobile (cloud) computing to connect to students on a more personal level than just in the classroom. The iPhone' mobile computing feature allows easy transmission of data, videos, and calls because of its hardware, software and communication capabilities. For example, E-learning is a learning management system hosted by the University of the West Indies for students to be able to access course material, communicate with each other, receive feedback from lecturers and the list goes on. It is highly economical and has greatly improved efficiency especially for distance learners.
Moreover, the technologies of smartphones have paved the way for businesses as it provides greater flexibility and speed options. With the use of in-app features such as emails, it is no longer necessary to manually deliver letters and information at work. The iPhone has several features which allow easy transmission of documents wirelessly in an easy, readable format, without a scanner or fax machine. Additionally, the use of mobile computing on this device has improved efficiency, accessibility and convenience whilst minimizing costs for the business such as web conferencing ( for meetings and training) thus reducing travel expenses. It is argued that smartphones can have an inimical effect on businesses and education for the main reason being distraction.
I strongly support that argument by means of personal experience. For example, during a class, the lecturer stopped and drew attention to a student asking, “Are you on the phone?” she replied “yes”, it was only then I realized what was taking place because I too was distracted browsing through social media. This is a serious issue not only to lecturers but employers as well. According to studies, employees spend at least two hours on their phone doing things unrelated to work and therefore, it usually takes more than twenty-five (25) minutes for that individual to regain focus of the task assigned. If employees continue to allow their smartphone to distract them from performing their tasks, it will not only affect the productivity but affect the business to client relationship which is crucially important to any success of a business.
In conclusion, smartphones are reshaping the future for education and businesses by providing solutions to every aspect. The device’s mobile computing features have proven to be tremendously beneficial in both fields improving accessibility, efficiency, and communication while maintaining a low budget cost. Apple has continued to stay on top of the game and will only get better with time. I know we’re all wondering what the future of iPhones would look like, perhaps in the next two years, maybe ten. Apple in the next two years are currently looking to provide curved screens and ceramic bodies to prevent scratches, one port for insertion of a memory card and speakers on both sides thus contributing to the further advancement of modern technology.
