Professionalism in the workplace is very important for the workers' morale and well-being. It should not be taken lightly when someone in the workplace seems to be disrupting the professional environment. In the given situation; the people who were doing the unacceptable behavior seemed to not understand the repercussions of their actions. It is very important for a workplace to set in stone some rules and regulations regarding the matter. Shirley Wright gave me an insight on how the company handles these types of situations.
Filing a formal complaint is going to be too harsh for the individuals involved. The punishment is too severe and I believe that the individuals were not aware of the repercussions. Even though they seem to not know the punishment, it is not an excuse to act in such a way. I solemnly believe in second chances; therefore, I agree with Ron DesVue's advice. These individuals seemed to be misguided, and they would benefit from some directions from a co-worker. Fortunately, I was the one who heard it and not somebody else. I would talk to them and tell them that they need to stop doing these inappropriate actions. Giving them the second chance that they deserve is the best possible option; I will let them know that the next time I overhear them, I will go straight and file a formal complaint. Recording the conversation, as Hugh Jim Bissell suggested is not an option for me. Since I am not filing for a formal complaint, it is not necessary to record them for evidence. These people just happen to think that it was right to make those remarks.
Frieda Choose's advice is a very interesting one. She seemed to be only worried about racist remarks which kind of worries me. It seemed that she thinks being sexist is acceptable, but being racist is not. The "boys will be boys" remark is not an excuse for these type of behaviors. It is unacceptable and needs to be handled correctly. The issue is not about if the conversation is private or not; it is about the unacceptable remarks towards the people in the workplace. Since Frieda said that it is fine if the conversation is done privately, I slightly agree to it. You cannot control people's thoughts, you can only influence them. If they think a certain way towards somebody, it is their choice to keep it private and hopefully not involve anyone else. The organization definitely has problems. The first thing I have noticed is the lack of consistency between the individuals who gave the advice on how to handle these type of situations. As far as the organization having set rules towards the situation, there is obviously a rule in place. Resolving the situation has to be handled by everyone in the organization.
I would suggest to the human resources that the core values of the company have to be reinstated. I would suggest that there should be a quarterly refresher meeting about sensitivity so that everyone in the company will be reminded of some certain rules. Creating a desirable atmosphere in the workplace should not be an option. Professionalism is a good way to start to make it happen. Individuals in the workplace should be sensitive about each other, especially if they are in a very diverse group.
