Last summer break turned out to be pretty memorable, especially this one day at Newport Beach with my friends. It wasn't anything super special or planned out - just one of those random perfect days that stick with you.
We decided to head out early to beat the traffic (which never works in LA, but we tried). Sarah picked me up at 7 AM in her beat-up Honda Civic, and we grabbed Jake and Maria on the way. The car's AC was barely working, but we didn't care - windows down, music up, typical road trip stuff.
The beach wasn't too crowded when we got there, probably because it was a Wednesday. We found this perfect spot near the pier where we could see the surfers but weren't too close to the water. Jake brought this huge umbrella his mom made him take, which we totally made fun of until the sun got really intense.
We did all the usual beach things, but somehow it felt different that day. Maria brought a volleyball, and even though none of us are any good, we spent hours playing. There was this group of guys next to us who kept score of our terrible game and cheered whenever anyone actually managed to get the ball over the net.
Around lunch, we realized nobody had brought real food - just chips and cookies. Sarah had this brilliant idea to walk to the pier for tacos. The guy at the taco stand gave us extra guac for free because Jake told some terrible dad joke that made him laugh. Best fish tacos I've ever had, honestly.
The highlight wasn't even anything big - just this moment when we were all sitting on our towels, kind of tired from swimming. This tiny sand crab kept trying to steal our Doritos, and we spent way too long making up stories about his crab family and why he needed those chips so badly.
We stayed way later than planned. The sunset that evening was ridiculous - like something from a postcard. Everyone was taking pictures, but Jake insisted on just watching it without phones. He can be weirdly deep sometimes, but he was right - it was better just experiencing it.
Looking back, I think what made it special was how unplanned everything was. We didn't have any expectations or schedules. It was just a simple day at the beach that turned out perfect because we were all actually present in the moment.
I've been to the beach tons of times, but this day stands out. Maybe it's because we're all heading to different colleges soon, or maybe it's just one of those random days that becomes special for no real reason. The whole day felt like a scene from one of those coming-of-age movies.
Sometimes the best memories come from the most ordinary days. That beach day wasn't anything spectacular on paper - just friends, sand, waves, and some stolen chips - but it's the kind of day you look back on and smile about. It reminded me that fun doesn't need to be complicated or expensive; sometimes it's just about being with the right people at the right time.
P.S. The crab never did get those Doritos, but we did leave him a few crumbs before we left. Hope he got that promotion he was working toward (inside joke from our made-up crab stories).
