Undocumented immigrants are often being discriminated against, threatened or in constant fear with deportation, poor treatment, or separation from their loved ones. There are reasons why immigrants come to the United States. Some of the main reasons they migrate is in seek of a better opportunity at success, escape poverty, seek healthcare, education, and to escape violence. Life of an immigrant in the United States is not an easy life for them. It is tough once they arrive since “they just bring with them their traditions, customs, and beliefs that change the dynamic of culture with the U.S.” And language barriers make it hard to communicate.
To begin with, Immigrants come crossing the border in the middle of the night or the bright day with the hope of a better life in America. Men, women, and children come in tired and fearful of what’s to happen. As they cross to the other side border patrols are there waiting to detain people illegally crossing the border to take them to detention centers where it is in unsanitary conditions “Vice President Mike Pence had toured a Border Patrol facility in Texas after being reported that migrants are held in dangerous conditions” ( Jim Sergeant). Currently, detention centers are unable to house thousands who are coming in which has led them to house migrants outside border patrol facilities, in tents, and under a highway overpass.
At present, families are being separated. Parents are being detained from work, streets, and homes. “The Trump administration has identified 471 parents who were removed from the United States without their children” (Priscilla Alvarez CNN). Did you know that forced separation and deportation have psychological effects on individuals? According to ULC today children whose parents are deported experience anxiety, aggression, sense of fear, sleeping and eating disturbances. Yolanda Suarez stated that “Separating families and deporting adults has an incredible toll on youth and families”.
Like many issues today, there is a debate on immigration between the two political parties. Everyone agreed that illegal immigrants were a problem but as of now, it is a human right to live anywhere you want. There are really no attempted solutions but the thing that has been debated for several years is to legalize them by remaining in the states if they pass a criminal background check and pay taxes. Implement a better job program is another solution that will open opportunities to non-U.S. workers so they would not enter the United States illegally.
No employee in America, including immigrants, should have unfair treatment from their employers. According to Vickerstaff Law Officce Undocumented immigrants have the right to certain workplace protections, states the American Civil Liberties Union.
In conclusion, with the information provided above immigrants come into the United States not knowing what to expect. They are often being discriminated against, threatened or in constant fear with deportation, poor treatment, or separation from their loved ones.
