Living in a modern society has redefined the meaning of life in many ways. Nowadays, the most popular social networks have come to define the essence of existence as making others feel less critical by reducing them to meaningless followers. These followers are expected to like and comment on non-offensive posts that showcase the person's perceived success in life. Socialites, as they are called, have shown that the meaning of life is to ensure that your life looks spectacular on your social media pages while reducing your unfollowed friends to mere followers. In fact, social media has made these social images more important than the gods in their respective religions. Social media has transformed the meaning of life into living beyond life's expectations. Every day, social media users expect new experiences to be shared and emulated. It has become a universal norm that if one is not popular on social media, they are not truly living life. Therefore the new meaning of living in a modern society is dicussed in this essay.

In light of this, it is evident that millennials have reduced life to likes and followers. Looking closely at the lives of the social mongers, it is evident that the meaning of life is spending hours in front of a screen waiting for the next update, comment, following and like. The socialites have ensured the meaning of life is to push their followers beyond their healthy lives by making them feel that they are only worthy of keeping tabs on the next big thing that they are engaging. These socialites have ensured that life has been reduced to the detrimental appraisal of egos. They have guaranteed that the experience of social media is the only life worth living in the modern society. Their meaning of life would place Plato and Archimedes in awe.

The meaning of life according to the socialites is having the best camera to capture that critical moment that is supposed to be remembered forever. However, such moments are diluted by the immense amount of photo editing and hashtags. Life as we know it has become a film that is being continually edited and deleted with the absence of the essential minimum of likes and comments. They have shown that the meaning of life is taking selfies of newly born children and adding emoji’s on their precious faces. They have decided to take matters of life in determining which emoji suits best the newborn who is only beginning their life. Thus, life is meaningless without the emoji’s and photo editing for social media likes and following.

Life is not life without the experiences that one gains as they grow. Such a moment is captured and in some cases can be shown to future generations. With the age of social media, beyond the socialites, the religious groups have also decided to parade the meaning of life. Religious leaders have become socialites or are it socialites who have alluded the ways of online socialization? According to Metz (107), religion has been known for years to be the opium of the human mind. Without faith, the human mind cannot fathom the complexities of life. Belief ensures that humans live life in a way that they will not suffer retribution in the next life after death. Religious socialites have provided that the definition of being is by ensuring that the places of worship have as many followers as possible.

Similarly to online communities, places of worship have turned to social sites for liking and disliking. Members are liking and disliking the posh and luxurious lives of the religious societies all in the name of leading the sheep to greener pastures. The sheep, on the other hand, have deterred their way to the green pastured and decided to feed on dry fodder stored in barns. Instead of the religious herdsmen of leading the sheep to the land of calm waters and green pasture, they have engaged in the business of selling high-quality fodder. The high-quality hay, according to the religious herdsmen, is supposed to guarantee a life of prosperity for the sheep. The feed once consumed is supposed to ensure that the sheep evade the snares of poverty and social discrimination. However, the sheep has continued to be slain by the herdsmen and rogue jackals. Religious places have been turned into showrooms where the sheep can boast and show off the glistening wool on their bodies. Most of the sheep have invested heavily in synthetic fleece which in a real sense has been shaved off another sheep. The sheep converge in high expectation of each other but do not raise a hand to help the poor sheep with no wool to cover their bodies in winter.

Life has become a trend that anyone with enough following is worth to determine the outcome of their followers. Ranging from religious herders to socialites, the experience can be described as the reflection seen on the lens of a camera. The inventor of the pinhole camera would be very disappointed to see how their invention has been misused in the reinvention of life. The camera was intended to capture moments that needed to be paused for future reference. The camera has now become the tool that the religious herders and socialites use to rewrite the meaning of life. Not only have these two managed to mislead many followers but also have managed to influence visionaries to use the tool for political gain.

According to politicians the meaning of life is ensuring that they are reelected in office severally as they create a façade of working for the common good of the followers. Politicians have continued to amass substantial weight as they feed on the followers’ vision of freedom and prosperity. They have ensured their followers have remained at the bare minimum to vote in any promise of a better life. Once in the all too familiar position and office, the pig forgets and continues to consume copious amount of the resources. The pig continually excretes on the streets where the voters have to suffice with the stench.

Withal, the meaning of life has become a perception of following and leading. Life for many humans has been reduced to imprisonment in the self-manifested jails. The urge to follow and lead has diminished life into a meaningless abyss of weight gain and wasted hours. The meaning of life has changed from experiencing to capturing, editing, posting and reposting. Life has become a blatant excuse to oppress the already poor while subjecting the human race to a culture of following. The meaning of life has become the fellowship of the followers.
