Do women need to put more effort in their jobs to get paid as much as their male colleagues? This topic on gender inequality has always been controversial over the generations and today’s society due to women’s lack of recognition. This is seen in the workplace, schools, the streets, and even home. This has been a problem for many decades even centuries due to womens’ roles in the past while their husbands did all the hard work. It is 2018. Everything has changed and so should this.
An activist organization, National Organization for Women, was founded in 1966 by Betty Friedan dedicated to equal rights trying to make change in the country. This organization is making a difference and inspiring all women in the nation by taking action with marches, rallies, non-violent protests, and much more. NOW is composed of women and men and has over 500, 000 members making change in the United States. As the NOW website states, “NOW strives to take action through intersectional grassroots activism to promote feminist ideals, lead societal change, eliminate discrimination, and to achieve and protect the equal rights of all women and girls in all aspects of social, political, and economic life. ” This activist group speaks out and takes action in order to achieve their goal in making women’s rights equal in the nation and not be thought of housewives. Their actions in the past have created various opportunities for women with employment, education, harassment, discrimination, and much more. However, as the years go by, there are more obstacles for women which is why this organization strives to achieve their goals with all of their members. As mentioned, there are over 500, 000 members and 550 chapters in all of the states which is incredible for women and men to come together and fight against this.
The National Organization for Women are known to achieve their goals in the public eye with all of the support from the members. For instance, NOW gained attention in 1978 with the march for the Equal Rights Amendmenting which attracted over 100, 000 people. There were many other marches and rallies that attracted over 600, 000 people making it a success. NOW has also made hotlines and petitions for government funding for homeless women and stopping violence which won them the passage of a federal Violence Against Women Act in 1994. It is amazing to see how people coming together to make a difference can really change the nation. Even though NOW has succeeded and made many differences to the nation, they are still in the battlefield today fighting and trying to equalize women and men. As the years pass, opposers come along such as Donald Trump making it a harder to deal with.
One of the biggest problems the organization is dealing with right now along with the entire nation is on Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination in the Supreme Court of the United States. Kavanaugh is on Trump’s side wanting to control females’ bodies and put their lives in danger. The President and Judge of the United States are planning to overturn the Roe v. Wade case on legalizing abortion. How can men decide a women’s choice? Not only is this taking back women’s rights to privacy but also going to effect women with low-income making them “housewives”. NOW is also facing the creation of “conscience and religious freedom” division which allows a healthcare worker to deny medical care against their religious beliefs or morals that they believe would do harm to them. This is ridiculous and is why a democratic or even an intelligent human being should be President of the United States. This affects women and men in the LGBTQ community and those with different religious beliefs. The National Organization for Women has made and is still making a difference in the nation. With Gender Inequality going on in the workplace, schools, and home, NOW strives for female empowerment and to succeed in recognition.
With all the effort NOW puts in for all women in the nation, all 300 million females in the United States should be inspired by all the success and become members of this organization. The lack of women fighting for their own rights is a disgrace and needs to be changed. Also, with all the controversy going on with Donald Trump as President, hopefully NOW can represent all women and make more changes in the future.
