In this essay I’m going to talk about bullying. I chose this topic because I thought this topic is familiar to everyone and also it occurs in every generation. This problem is difficult to solve.
First of all, I want to talk about what is bullying and when bullying begins. Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious problems. It also happens in workplaces in public and on the Internet. Bullying is happening everywhere and it can happen with people of any age group.
Bullies have always been a part of any group’s development, from the earliest civilizations and in regions, militaries, schools and companies. In early 1980s the workplace sexual harassment issue has been in the public consciousness. In the United States, bullying first became a major public issue, when some schools and government agencies took an interest in safeguarding against it. Later, this spilled over into private workplaces. In the next paragraph of the essay I’m going to talk about different types of bullying.
There are 4 common different types of bullying. Verbal bullying, Social bullying, Physical bulling and Cyber bullying. First, Verbal bullying is saying or writing mean things. For example teasing: making fun of people, taunting: to annoy and upset someone by making unkind remarks to them and threatening to cause harm. Second, social bullying involves hurting someone’s reputation or relationships. For example leaving someone out on purpose, telling other children not to be friends with someone, spreading rumors about someone and embarrassing someone in public. Third, physical bullying involves hurting a person’s body or belongings. For example hitting, kicking, punching and making mean or rude hand gestures. Fourth, cyber bullying happens in public and also in private. It involves the use digital technologies such as computers and smartphones. For example sending hurtful texts, posting images or videos that can hurt person and imitating others online. Bullying happens at urban suburban and rural areas were all equally likely to be bullied. Suburban young people were slightly less likely and rural young people slightly more likely than the national average to bully others. Bullying tends to happen most often in and around schools, specifically in those areas where there is little or no adult supervision. Example at playground, hallways, cafeteria, classroom before the lesson begins.
Next point of this essay is about signs for bullying. There are many warning signs that may recognize that someone is affected by bullying or someone bullying others. Recognizing the warning signs is an important first step in taking action against bullying. The issue is not all children who are bullied or are bullying others ask for help. So the important thing is to talk with children who show signs of being bullied or bulling others. Signs a child is being bullied are unexplainable injuries, lost or destroyed their personal belongings, feeling sick or illness and so on. Signs a child is bullying others are get into physical or verbal fights, have friends who bully others, don’t accept responsibility for their action and so on. You think that you should ask another person for help. But kids don’t tell adults for many reasons. For example, kids may want to handle it on their own to feel control again or they may feel like no one could understand because they already feel socially isolated or they don’t want adults to know that being bullied. But there are things you can do to keep yourself. First thing is treat everyone with respect. Keep in mind that everyone is different. Second thing is stand up for others. Hanging out with them will help them know they aren’t alone. These are important because there is no solution but, if each person may aware of these things, perhaps we can decrease bullying.
Lastly I want to talk about suicide. Suicide is the act of taking one’s own life. The statistics on bullying and suicide are increasing. Suicide is the third cause of death among young people. There are almost 3000 people commit suicide every day. Japan is the second highest suicide country in the world because of financial pressure, bullying and hikikomori (isolation from others).
Therefore, as seen from the essay, I think stopping the bullying is difficult but we can address behaviors, being positive, have open communication and look for warning signs. I think the first step to decrease bully is to promote self-esteem. Everyone should be proud of itself. At school we can do a questionnaire survey to know a situation. Whether there is a bullying or not. And teacher must pay attention to their students because bullying often happens when teachers doesn’t see the students properly. But the important thing is talking to friends and family. If you talk to them you might feel lighter and they might help them.
