“To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived; this is to have succeeded”
- Ralph waldo Emerson
This powerful ideation has always inspired and motivated me in my life by directing me towards medical field of education. According to this quote success is achieved when an individual loses itself in serving people and gets inner peace after treating sufferings of others. Earlier my definition of success was completely different but once I experienced the joy of curing ill people, that made me realize what is the purpose of my existence in the world.
I belong to a small family of five including my father, mother, elder sister ,younger brother and myself. My father Mr.Chandrakantbhai Bhikhalal Pansuria is a real estate developer and have constructed several multistory apartments under the company name “ “.My mother Mrs Neetaben pansuria is a housemaker who has the responsibility to manage our family. My elder sister has a master’s degree in electronics and communication Engineering, but she was highly passionate about fashion designing, so she had followed her dream and now runs a boutique. My younger brother is in grade 10 pursing higher primary education. They have taught me to never be afraid to try something new and always encouraged me in whatever I do.
I have completed my 10th grade at Shree Swaminarayan H.V Vidyalaya, Surat with a GPA of 8.8. The school is affiliated with a Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum which is the highest and one of the toughest education body in my country. The remarkable grades in 10th and an interest in biology motivated me to select Biology as a major and I was keen to know more about the functioning and mechanisms of a human body. I Further completed my 12th grade from Shree Swaminarayan H.V Vidyalaya, where I managed to score 86.8% in 2013 and secured 6th place in the entire institution.
These academic successes of mine in the past catapulted me to follow my dream of becoming a doctor and hence I decided to opt for MBBS without having a second thought. Also, I am a very extrovert person and really feel satisfied by interacting with people and find peace in helping others. Even my father always dreamt that one of his children becomes a doctor, his life motto is that we rise by serving the needful following which he became the chairperson of many charitable and social trusts. He wanted me to help people by becoming a doctor so that the economically backward class of the society can be treated for free. To fulfill his dream and to become a useful asset for my society, I started my journey of becoming a medical practitioner.
I attended a seminar for an MBBS course in China, which grabbed my attention as the study pattern their emphasized more on practical knowledge by using modern technological dummy bodies and instruments. Besides this I can have an international exposure and a globally recognized medical degree in the Chinese institutions.
I successfully graduated with a degree in MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) from Soochow medical university, Suzhou, Jiangsu, china from 2013-2019. My hard work and dedication were paid off when I scored 3.6/4 CGPA and securing fourth position in the entire batch. Due to my academic excellence and success, I was awarded three scholarships along the period of five years of my education at the university.
After the completion of my theoretical course, I also finished one year of rotatory resident internship in all specialization subjects. Where I got an opportunity to hone my professional skills and self confidence under supervision of experts so that I become capable to encounter clinical practice independently. I have successfully managed all types of emergencies- medical, surgical obstrectics, neonatal and pediatrics and also acquired adequate and valuable communication and leadership skills.
Meanwhile when I was continuing my internship, my father was diagnosed with squamous carcinoma of the buccal mucosa. This news devastated my family and had entirely changed my perception of life as it made me realize that life is very uncertain, and anything can happen in the wink of an eye. We had never seen my father so shattered and demoralized about his condition. He had undergone a major surgery along with radiotherapy for three months which completely ruined his immune system due to which he was vulnerable to acquire any ordinary infectious diseases and since than he has not fully recovered. This pitiful condition of his dwindled not only his health but also business. He had to travel 300 kms back and forth even for his routine examinations and checkups which had a huge effect on the finances of the family as most of his time was spent travelling for treatments and there was no one to look after the business. This made me realize that my country lacks access to technology and expertise which could treat my father’s misery. I have seen him in tremendous pain and suffering and that galvanized me to contribute my life to do something for cancer patients in my country as I don’t want anyone to encounter the same agony as my father. All these circumstances prompted me to opt for a post-graduation program in Oncology.
I started my search on internet for universities where I could study Oncology for post graduation. I short listed three universities namely Mcgill university, university of Toronto and university of British Columbia. All these universities were Canadian as Medical scene in the country was world renowned. I decided to apply for the interdisciplinary oncology course in the University of BC because it is the only university in my list which gave its students special access to the clinicians and faculty members of the world renowned British Columbia cancer agency whose vision is “A world free from cancer”. By getting this privilege I intend to acquire practical knowledge about high quality integrated care and cancer research outcome. BC cancer agency is amongst the best cancer outcomes in the world with highest survival rates in the country. Due to which it has become a model for precision cancer care across the globe.
Through the practical and theoretical knowledge in the Oncology course at UBC with training under experts, I intend to treat cancer patients in my city so that they don’t have to spend their valuable time travelling for treatment and can receive highly professional and technologically advanced treatment just a few miles away from their home. Unlike my father, I want my patients to spend more time with their families. This is how I want to dedicate my life in a meaningful way and return something valuable to humanity as human life is the most valuable gift one can get and if I can become a person who can save this gift and help even one individual to get rid of their misery, my life would be a success and I would believe that my purpose in this beautiful world is served.
