Where did everything come from? How did we get to where we are now? Where do human fits in? Where are the things heading? These are the questions that origin stories of different cultures have addressed for thousands of years. Big History is an attempt of examining history through science from the Big Bang to the present. In this project, we are focusing on the origin of the universe — the Big Bang Theory.
Discoveries in astronomy and physics have shown a reasonable doubt that our universe did have a beginning. It all started with an explosion known as the Big Bang. Astronomically, the Big Bang is a theory where the universe originated billions of years ago in an explosion from a single point of nearly infinite energy density. As its simplest, the Big Bang is a scientific theory about how the universe started and then made the stars and galaxies we see today. As time passes, the universe is growing and the temperature is falling. Cosmology is the study of how the universe began and its development.
According to the theory, the universe began as very hot and dense super forces which are the combination of the four fundamental forces with no stars, form or any about 13.7 billion years ago. Singularity is a zone which defies our current understanding of physics. A singularity is defined as a point where the predictable nature of physics breaks down because the curvature predicted by general relativity at that point is infinite. They are thought to exist at the core of black holes. Scientists who study cosmology agree that the theory matches what they have observed so far. Other scientists who contributed to the research of the expanding universe are Vesto Slipher, Albert Einstein, Alexander Friedmann and Edwin Hubble.
There are three strong pieces of evidence that support the Big Bang theory. They include the existence of a microwave background radiation, the expansion of the universe which is also known as the red-shift leading to Hubble’s Law and the relative abundance of very light elements which are hydrogen and helium. Stars do not remain the same, but change as they age.
Before the discovery of the Big Bang it can be said that time had no meaning. If the Big Bang was the beginning of time, then there exists no universe before the Big Bang, since there could not be any before if there was no time! In the meantime, others state that the Big Bang was not the beginning of time 13.8 billion years ago. In the contrary, some of them believe that there exists a completely different universe before the Big Bang and it may be a very different one from the universe we know today.
