Nowadays, having a college degree is quite important for personal growth and development and everyone should strive to get one. Many high school graduates, however, decide not go to college because the four or more years required for studying need a lot of commitment in terms of time, effort, and money. Many people did not know that attending college is important in an individual’s life and for this reason most people just went to high school and then, later on, sort out jobs. Despite the cost of studying and the delay to work, I believe that the college education is necessary and desirable in today’s world. This essay looks at the importance of having a college degree to an individual and the society.
The first important reason why earning a college degree is that it provides a person with better job opportunities and a conducive environment for professional growth because it equips an individual with proper training that may be required in a particular field. People without college degrees are likely to be limited to basic jobs in service, construction, and manufacturing industries. One also has an opportunity to earn a better salary than someone who only has a high school or vocational school education. It is estimated that those with a college degree have better starting salaries and earn almost twice as much as those with only high school education during their lifetime. A good example can be seen during job interviews. Those without degrees are normally less considered and are less likely to secure jobs when they go for interviews, but those with college degrees normally have better chances of getting employed, better salaries, and also get better positions hence a better quality of life.
Additionally, going to college enables a person to acquire the relevant knowledge and skills, and this provides the necessary academic background for advancement in a given career. The four or more years taken to complete college provide the students with adequate time and resources needed to explore the many different areas such as humanities, social sciences, and sciences. One can also explore professional fields like business, engineering, information technology, and health sciences. Students are also allowed to take various academic courses during their time in college, and this enables them to acquire knowledge and skills that are vital for their growth and development in the particular areas.
Colleges tend to provide the labor force with certain knowledge and skills that are beneficial for the advancement of the society. When students attend college, they can exercise their minds and hence develop strategies that will assist them in dealing with various issues. Over the four years in college, the students are faced with many tasks that are challenging, and this enables them to learn how to approach issues and solve them in the best ways. They graduate with a lot of skills and strategies that they can use to deal with hard tasks later on in life both in their jobs and also in their personal lives. Ultimately, the society can advance well as the various issues that arise such as poverty, crime, and political unrest are dealt with properly and conclusively (Ellsberg 142). In conclusion, there are a lot of arguments in support of the value of a 4-year college education to an individual. It provides a person with better job opportunities and also better-paying jobs. Those with college degrees also develop knowledge and skills in particular areas that enable them to advance in their careers. It also helps the society to progress as people who attend college learn various ways to deal with issues that are currently facing the world. These benefits far outweigh the problems that come with college education such as the cost and delay in working. Thus, I believe that anyone who wants a bright future should attend college and acquire a degree.
