Many years ago, we had the ability of contacting others by writing letters and having to wait for them to write back which in fact could take up to 2 or more weeks, or setting up a date to meet in person. Now that we are in the 21st century, technology had changed tremendously giving us the ability to communicate through text messaging, face-timing and social media. I do believe by having the ability to connect with someone through words on a digital screen and through using technology, it would in fact, hinder our social skills between one human being another.
So here I will be providing strong arguments.
Premise 1: Some people use social media for ways to pay their bills.
Premise 2: Social media are used by everyone around the world.
Premise 3: Social media are used by people to help find them employers.
Premise 4: Social media are used for people to communicate with their families and friends around the world.
Therefore, social media does not hinder interpersonal relationships. Based on the above premises and conclusion, my argument is concluded to be deductive. For my first premise, it is true that a lot of people use social media to pay their bills. Not everyone will have their own transportation to drive around to pay their bills. It also makes it quicker for the process to go by faster, with even giving them confirmation sent to their email they have paid on time. For my second premise, yes everyone around the world use social media. I don’t think there is not one person who doesn’t used social media, because technology is basically social media that is improving rapidly. My third premise, states a true factor, because anyone who needs employment goes to the number one resource social media. There are many job sites such as LinkedIn, Craigslist, Indeed, SnagaJob even staffing companies it can also potentially raise employer’s salary using this type of social media. For my fourth premise, social media can definitely help families and friends stay in contact and in the loop of everything that is going on. Because with how things use to be communicating, sending letters can take up to 2-4 weeks to be delivered to a family member or friend. Then once they receive it you would have to wait another 2-4 weeks to get it back from them making it so much stressful because you are so eager to know if they are ok. With my premise stating reasoning how social media doesn’t hinder social media. Counterargument supporting how social media can hinder interpersonal relationships.
Premise 1: Social can in fact hinder interpersonal relationships with children’s ability to learn.
Premise 2: It is not always intellectual stimulating for everyone.
Premise 3: It can inhibit social interactions.
Premise 4: Not everyone use’s social media to communicate with family and friends.
Therefore, social media can hinder interpersonal relationships with your family. For my first premise, it states the fact of how social media can hinder interpersonal relationships for families, children’s and friends. For children’s, once they find something very entertaining on the internet or even on an iPhone, they become addicted. It has been tested that social media can mess with children’s ability to learn, they can lose focus of school work. Social networking allows people to ignore their feelings, and obligations to the people around them. When people are without internet it makes them anxious about the updates and responses that are waiting for them to check. For my second premise, yes social doesn’t necessarily intellectual stimulate everyone, because they are not as addicted as everyone else are. There are many ways people have relations with social media. Some people find social media to be just a hangout spot for communicate, play games, chat and Facebook.
When others use it for business purposes or important necessities. For my third premise, definitely states an important factor based on actual relationships. I know that in a relationship there is always that one person that is too much into social media for example Facebook. They can put a strain on the relationship potentially losing the trust because everyone uses social media for variety of things. You can meet new people causing to gain a new relationship with new friends, so it can in fact hinder interpersonal relationships.
For my fourth premise, with everyone around the world using social media for different things. It is obvious that not everyone that use social media just use it for business relation. 91% of 16-24-year old’s use the internet for social networking, Social media use is linked with increased rates of anxiety, depression and poor sleep. But however, Social media sites also give people a false sense of connection. In studies at Cornell University, it was found that people have a hard time distinguishing between meaningful relationships that they build in the real world and the numerous causal relationships built through the social networking sites (Jung, 2015). When people bury themselves in their computers spending all their time and energy on meaningless relationships online their connections with their real-world relationships become weakened and possibly lost. Social media was created to help people maintain connections, network, and obtain information.
During my argument I have given the reasons of how social media can hinder tons of interpersonal relationships. In conclusion for my argument being deductive argument social media is, and will continue to be, harmful, unless something is done about it. The power it has over people is dangerous and often goes unnoticed. People should care because if not addressed, or taken care, of social media could cause national and international problems. Social media stunts interpersonal growth and increases narcissism in many internet users. Even if the user is not psychologically affected by social media, they are still in danger. Nobody is immune to the harmful side effects social media including identity theft, stalkers, or hackers. Social networking allows hoaxes and false information to cause widespread chaos. “The dark side of social media is that, within seconds, anything can be blown out of proportion and taken out of context. And it is very difficult not to get swept up in it all” (Formichetti.) If there are no regulations or limitations on social media, the repercussions will accumulate. People need to change the destructive patterns of social media use before it destroys society. The fast, easy access to information that is supposed to be beneficial to society is actually detrimental to society.
